The Window - Lesson Plan

“Behind every closed window there is a story.” This lesson is based around a single image of a window with the shutters closed. The lesson includes a variety of discussion and conversation tasks that you can use to get students thinking and talking about the image. These are followed by language focus tasks and some more creative tasks. Finally, there are some suggestions for digital creation and research follow-up tasks. It’s not necessary to use all of the tasks in the plan, you can choose to use any of the tasks individually or change the order of the tasks depending on the approach you want to take and the level of your students.

The Girl & the Tiger - Lesson Plan

The Girl & the Tiger - Lesson Plan

This lesson is based on a single image of a girl sitting in the forest with a tiger. The lesson includes a variety of discussion and conversation tasks that you can use to get students thinking and talking about the image. These are followed by language focus tasks and some more creative tasks. As well as vocabulary, the plan can be used to practice ‘present continuous’, ‘present perfect continuous’ or ‘second conditional’. Finally, there are some suggestions for digital research and creation follow-up tasks. It’s not necessary to use all of the tasks in the plan, you can choose to use any of the tasks individually or change the order of the tasks depending on the approach you want to take and the level of your students.

This is a simple reading activity that can encourage students to think about the structure of a text or dialogue and make connections between the parts of the text. You can use the activity with any short text or you could just use a couple of sentences and split them into sense chunks. This activity uses a website that has a collection of videos related to world records. Many of the videos are of very ordinary people inventing very simple world records. They then send the videos to the site. The activity gets students talking together about world records and they then use their phone camera to create a short video together. This is an entertaining way to give students some speaking practice and get them working collaboratively together.

Tech Enhanced Activities - Simplifying Text

This activity is based around an online tool called Rewordify that analyses the vocabulary in text and simplifies it. The tool also analyses the text and provides some vocabulary building activities for students to use to consolidate what they learn. It’s a useful tool to teach students to use so that they can tackle more complex texts and work autonomously to improve their own vocabulary.
