This original three page story from Chez Nathalie is about a haunted house. Two children, Marc and Pierre, make a bet with a new student at their school, Jacques. If Jacques is able to stay in the house for five minutes on October 31st, he will receive all of Marc and Pierre’s Halloween candies. If Jacques loses the bet, he must give his Halloween candy to them. Will Jacques win the bet? What will he find in the house? This story is accompanied by questions about comprehension, vocabulary, inferences, and personal connections. This product is designed for students learning French as a Second Language (FSL). The first few pages contain a list of French Halloween vocabulary with illustrations. The students are witches and they see a job offer in the newspaper (included). A haunted house owner is looking for a mean, scary, ugly witch to work for him to scare visitors. The students’ task is to write a cover letter and résumé to convince him that they are the best witch for the job. In the letter, they describe their face/body, clothing, and personality using appropriate scary adjectives. In the résumé, they describe their employment experience, education, and more! They even have to provide details about their broom flights and previous witch brews! All of the plot lines are about some kind of change in the life of the animal in question: In Le chat noir gourmand, the black cat tries to steal Halloween candy. In La toile d’araignée extraordinaire, the spider weaves an enormous web. In Détective Charlotte Chauve-souris, the bat becomes a detective and investigates a serious crime which involves a mouse. In Le hibou diurne, the owl decides to lead an active life during the day. In La fête d’Halloween des corbeaux, the ravens have a party on Halloween night. This product may be used as a fun activity or an evaluation tool as each worksheet is worth 15 marks.
