Living and Non Living
As young learners the difference between living and non living can be hard to determine. This pack provides tasks to explore, group and explain how to group our world into living and non living categories.
Tasks included are -
I Can Statements
• These can be displayed in your room
KWHL
• Two different pages; one for living and one for nonliving.
• Record what you know, want to know, how you may find it out and any new learning as you go through the pack.
Posters
• These posters are in color and black and white for two printing options.
• Choose and print.
• I teach that plants do move – a Venus Fly trap certainly does, a vine can curl around a frame and plants turn toward the sun. Some schools teach that living things can move and others do not – so the posters provide both options.
Matching
• Use the labels to sort the pictures.
• Discuss as you go and the students must say why they are placing the cards in each category.
Print and Go!
• Cut and sort the pictures and glue under the correct headings.
• Record living and nonliving
• Living or nonliving – explain why and how we use them
• Reflection task – describe living and nonliving
Reader
• Print this small reader to outline why living things are living.
• Instructions are included.
Interactive Note Pages
• Use the interactive note pages to further explore what living things need.
