Power Teaching

I am an Assistant Head Teacher who has worked in a number of inner-city schools in East London. My resources are designed to be imaginative, hands-on and very clear to follow. You can rely on them to support your teaching to the new 2014 Primary curriculum and Ofsted - many are proven 'Outstanding'. They are designed to foster curiosity, talk and aim to get children thinking creatively and across the boundaries of subjects. Adaptable if needed but good to go 'off the shelf' if time is short!

Year 6 Data Handling - Is my data discrete or continuous?

(0)
A short series of lessons designed to provide fun, real-life contexts for data collection that will get children out of the classroom and thinking about how maths relates to 'the real world'. Supporting activities explore how data can be presented as 'continuous' and 'discrete', clarifying an often-confused and miss-taught area of the Year 6 curriculum. Open-questions and opportunities for discussion characterise this resource, with a view to fostering children's deep understanding and 'mastery'. Resources include: * Active Primary Flipchart * Full detailed lesson plan covering 3 lessons * All accompanying worksheets, resources and other hand-outs across abilities (LA/MA/HA and SEN) Detailed lesson plans are clear and provide full instructions for completing the outdoor investigations and other activities. Key questions in bold support high-quality questioning for learners of all abilities. Outcomes: I can:  Conduct an investigation and systematically collect data  Draw tables to show data clearly  Analyse data finding the highest and smallest amounts (LA)  Analyse data finding the mean, median and mode amounts (MA/ HA)  Construct histograms to show continuous data  Construct bar charts to show discrete data  Combine data sets (distance thrown with birthdays, gender etc) to ask further questions  Use data to draw conclusions
