Future tense uncovered - le futur proche et le futur simple

The future tense uncovered! This is a series of at least 2 lessons to introduce the futur proche and the futur simple. Included in the 47 slide teacher PPT presentation is revision of the conjugation of “aller” then a crossword to check understanding. The formation of the “futur proche” is shown step by step. There is a match up activity of useful time phrases. Next is an exercise to insert the correct form of “aller” in sentences containing high frequency vocabulary. There is a speaking activity with picture prompts of using the 3rd person with the “futur proche” and forming negatives. To review understanding there is a slide of 15 sentences and pupils need to say whether they are in the future or the past. There is then a reading activity about holidays to build grammar awareness, distinguishing present past and future formations. Pupils are then taken through the formation of the “future simple”. This is very visual using animation and clear explanations. Irregular stems are listed. There is an exercise of 14 sentences and pupils have to decide whether they are in the future or the past. There is a match up activity of verbs in different forms. There is an exercise of 15 irregular verbs that need to be unscrambled. Next is a dialogue of two people writing about their future plans and pupils need to identify the verbs in the future. Easy to develop this to a comprehension task. There is a gap-fill exercise to complete on expressions that imply the future. There are 13 speaking questions for career and future plans. Next is a dominoes reading exercise can be done independently or in groups. There are then 3 reading past exam questions with solutions. The plenary is a 3-2-1 block review. There is an accompanying book of worksheets to complement the exercises within the PPT. Also included are the dominoes.

Teacher presentation to introduce "what's important to me" . The starter is a shape puzzle that recaps on school vocab. The slide can be printed off and pupils work independently to form the triangle. The teacher then introduces 7 things that are important to them. The pupils can use dictionaries and their books to prepare speaking presentations on what is important to them. There is a worksheet with a reading text that can be used for pupils as a prompt to write their own answers. There is also a storyboard template for them to prepare a plan. This would work equally well preparing for a speaking presentation. There is also a fun Sudoku puzzle. This is a lovely lesson to use as an icebreaker with new classes. This could be extended with use of "weil"

There are five excellent resources included to teach the imperfect tense using three skills; reading, writing and listening. The teacher PPT uses a visual step by step guide to the imperfect tense formation. The PPT also goes through irregular formations and when to use the imperfect tense. There is a crossword for a mini-progress check using 3 regular verbs; one for each verb group and also the verb “être”. There are 10 clues to solve. A worksheet is included for this. There is a short passage for pupils to identify the imperfect tense in context. This would be great to use as a modelled example for pupils to reproduce a text of what their life was like when they were younger. There is a translation exercise checking understanding of the different contexts of the imperfect tense. There is then an exercise where the pupils decide whether the sentences are in the perfect or imperfect tense. There is also a writing exercise where pupils build knowledge of 15 time markers associated with the imperfect tense. A worksheet is included for this. There is a reading gap fill exercise where pupils conjugate the verb into the correct form of the imperfect tense. A worksheet is included for this. The next exercise is a listening gap-fill from a YouTube clip of Aladdin. Pupils listen to part of the fairy tale and fill in the correct verb. A worksheet is included for this. The final exercise is a creative writing exercise - pupils have a choice of 3 titles As a plenary pupils refer to their learning journey completing a 3-2-1 block review.

Listening like a linguist - Literacy inset

This is a PPT that I used in a whole school literacy inset on "How to listen like a linguist". The starter the staff had to listen to a video of a popular song in French that everyone knew and fill in the gaps of missing words. Then take staff through two slides explaining how we develop listening language learning strategies. We show how the starter activity can be used for multiple purposes. We then show lyrics whereby pupils use thinking skills and knowledge of phonics to work out the tune. We show how this can be adapted for pupils to create their own lyrics. We give several YouTube links in both French and Spanish. There is an example of how transcripts can be cut out and pupils listen to reorder the text. An example from www.Lyricstraining.com is shown. An example of teaching new vocabulary through video is modelled with the topic of pets. Multiple choice reading and listening exercise is demonstrated. A gap fill grammar exercise with a song is shown. YouTube links for teaching key verbs and tenses are shown. Transcripts of exam listening questions are manipulated too. Links to external web sources are provided. The plenary is a Q&A for staff. Highly enjoyable! This would be followed up by depts sharing their ideas and also feeding back as to how they have adapted the strategies shown in the inset.

New Years' resolutions - Mes Résolutions

(1)
Updated for 2019 and a further reading resource added which is suitable for KS4 commenting on the most memorable events in France in 2019. Attached within this resource pack are an array of teaching materials to practice reading, speaking and writing using the future tense and future expressions. There is a teacher presentation with a view of Europe at New Year. The starter is Father Christmas’s resolution and the pupils have to work out what he has promised. The presentation then takes pupils through how to form the future tense. This then complements the speaking and writing frame. Pupils can then speak or write about their plans for the forthcoming year using and adapting future expressions, connectives and opinions. The plenary on the teacher PPT is a challenging translation exercise of what people have resolved to do. There is a second writing frame containing less prompts just sub-headings in terms of resolutions for different areas of their lives. There is a reading worksheet with 11 tweets regarding resolutions. Pupils have to scan the text to find out which tweet belongs to which person. There is also a word search attached. This pack is ideally suited to the first lesson back with your class. I have usually combined it with pupils setting their targets for the next half-term and reflecting on what went well in the previous year. This can be used with a variety of age groups and is easy to print and edit.
