The main activity involves students deciding whether certain substances will be solid liquid or gas on the different planets of the solar system. This could be a desk-bound actovity or you could print the imahes of the planets and their average temperatures and students could circulate the room to complete the activity. Suitable for mid-low attaining GCSE group or a sparky KS3 group.

The practical is based on melting Stearic acid and collecting the results as it cools and reaches its freezing point. Pure stearic acid should show a “flatlined” plot during the cooling curve to show that it is a “pure substance”
