An assessment task for the beginning of Private Peaceful about Tommo’s father’s death. Can be used as a formative assessment to baseline students. Suitable for KS3 students. Includes two extension tasks which focus on writing skills, particularly using different sentence types.

I used this powerpoint with year 7 to teach them the techniques and get them being creative to write their own poems.

Used with KS3 students studying Private Peaceful to write a letter to the author about an incident in the book, however can be adapted to any novel or non fiction activity. Template includes sentence starters and the plan includes questions to get students thinking.
