This engaging and adaptable resource was created for a Diverse Voices Scheme of Work for Year 7. This can be easily adapted for other year groups from 8-11. Extremely thought provoking and includes a range of discussion, independent and pair work tasks. An example response for an extended writing task has also been included at the end. There are two lessons but the extended writing task could be a standalone third lesson if needed.

For this lesson you will be considering post-reading activities. Hot seating will be a key method for this lesson as students explore the key characters in the novel.

For this lesson, students will be creating a wanted poster for Jonas and a missing poster for Gabriel. It is a great way to bring creativity into the classroom and review all of the information that they know about Jonas and Gabriel later on in the novel.

This is a post-reading letter writing task. Students will write a letter addressed to Lois Lowry sharing their thoughts and feelings about the novel The Giver.

For this lesson we will explore the structure of a court case as we learn of Jonas’ father’s true job details as a nurturer. Students are prompted to think about his role in the release of the newchild from the recording that Jonas is shown by The Giver.

This is a post-reading lesson for students to explore their creativity and how they would like to end the novel. They will be introduced to five alternative endings for the novel in terms of Jonas and Gabriel.

For this lesson, students will create their own Utopian community. This is excellent for exploration of both Utopian and Dystopian novels. Please note that students will need access to all of some of the following: Google slides Canva Powerpoint
