Creative Writing - pop group poetry!

(0)
The module begins by asking students to organise themselves into pop groups, devising name, image, band identity, etc. This stage can be extended as needed and when you feel the time is right, introduce the first stealth poetry analysis lesson on Name. Thereafter, you can blend poetry analysis and creative Band work according to the interests of your students. The poems have been chosen to facilitate comparison; While Kid and Name explore relationships and emotions, About his person considers what makes an individual. Stop all the clocks and Song explore love and its loss. Approaches to the poems in this module are collaborative and discussion-based, allowing students to engage with the ambiguity and resonance of poetry, while providing opportunities to look critically at language and its effects. The Pop-group wrap-around is a device for engaging students and to introduce them to a critical appreciation of the music industry. There are opportunities to link with the music dept- they could run a lyrics competition at the same time! It never fails.
