Welcome to Sentence Centre here you will meet the four different sentence types children need to know and use in year 2 SPaG. The sentences are presented as characters who talk about the properties of their sentence type. Included are two follow on activities that children can do at their tables to demonstrate their understanding.

An illustrated story introducing the Growth Mind-set Characters from the Elli project. Read how Bear and Elli set off to find a new home for Bear. Elli introduces Bear to a host of friends to help him overcome the problems he encounters on his journey. Children quickly identify with the different characters’ traits to help them overcome their own barriers to learning. Two Spelling mats arranged in phoneme families and displaying CEW in bold. One for year 1 and one for year 2. There are two copies one in letter join font and the other in comic sans. Both the year 1 and year 2 mats also include print outs for children to take home and practise spelling.

Numicon and British coins bank

Printed images of British coins to use as a bank in a role-play area, coins are matched with the pictures and stored there, the banker is in charge of making sure the correct coins and amount of coins are there at the end of the day. Numicon type images are used to reinforce the value of the coins to support addition and giving change.

A notebook file which supports children to estimate how many things they see. Dinosaurs appear briefly on the screen before they disappear, children are instructed to estimate how many they thought they saw, before the dinosaurs reappear and can be counted accurately. The dinosaurs are arranged in regular formations to support children in early addition by grouping.

Four games designed to support children in rehearsing their phonics skills prior to the phonic screening test. Children use their phonics skills to translate the alien language. In these games the children take on the role of aliens, they learn how to ask and answer questions like an alien. solve an alien treasure hunt and also create their own alien words. Most words have been used in past test papers. This activity is designed to be carried out over a number of days or as a carousel of activities throughout the day I have enclosed three copies of the slideshow. Meet all the graphemes for KS1 that make the ‘ai’ sound. They’re the Grey family and like to dress in grey to reinforce their ‘ai’ sound. All the CEW for year 1 and year 2 with this phoneme in are included as well as spelling rules which apply from English appendix 1. The powerpoint is designed to be used across year groups depending on your phonics teaching. Each character tells you about its grapheme and uses sounds spots to support reading and spelling. Once children are familiar with the family they can explore best bet rules and then apply their learning by using the dictated sentences also within the powerpoint. Two copies are included, one which uses my preferred font of Letterjoin and one with comic sans.

Over 10 weeks of resources including planning, video, interactive activities, posters etc. Here you get all of the Numberlanders 1-10 a group of unique colourful characters who support the teaching of number recognition. Numberland works on the principle of alliteration to support memory of number recall. As well as number recognition activities included also support count, order, positional language and much more.

The Word Wizards are a group of wizards who explain word types and their jobs to children. In this presentation you will meet Norbert Noun and his newt named Neil who together explain the difference between a proper and a common noun and the need for a capital letter. They also explain the plural rules and have some handy suffix spells to help children remember as well as this children learn about noun phrases.
