Outside of teaching I illustrate and write stories and poems for children, mostly aimed at junior age and early teens though I have illustrated books for early years too. My current books are ,"What's that all about then?" aimed at Juniors and early teens which I have written and illustrated myself and another book called "A slice of cake”for early years and infants written by Nebras Hassan and illustrated by myself. I also have taught meditation and relaxation through Tai Chi for many years.

WHAT'S THAT ALL ABOUT THEN? a book of stories , pictures and poems for Juniors

A selection of funny poems for kids or grown up kids illustrated with full colour cartoons. The poems range from short rhyming raps to longer story poems about the ups and downs of growing up and how to rise above problems and find the Heroic in our everyday lives. Whether worrying about the first kiss or rethinking how you treat others, the poems ask us about what we say and how our actions and attitudes affect how we regard others around us and how they see us. The poems are written by an elementary teacher and have been road tested in the classroom. They make great starting points for creative writing and discussion around a whole range of issues common to growing up in our contemporary world. The poems are paired with cartoon style illustrations that bring the words to life. Poetry is to be heard and spoken; many of the poems in the collection are great for rapping, chanting, or generally joining along with. Whether you are a parent looking for a fun way to share poetry with your kids or a teacher looking for some amusing start-ups to discussion or creative writing then there is much to find in this collection. Writing poetry should be grounded in personal experience to fully engage the listener or reader and much of the material in this collection is based upon the author’s personal life growing up, and the stuff that has happened since, in one way or another. personify your hopes, wishes , concerns and dreams- "The Hide Behind" using picture and poem

This is an upper KS 2 /LOWER KS 3 activity as it requires some skills in introspection and self investigation more suited to this age group. The lesson is based around my own back story , poem and illustration called the Hide Behind. It is lesson that needs to be dealt with sensitively as students are asked to share aspects of their characters and personalities with others in discussion. At no time should anyone be pressured to share anything they do not wish, keep it light, based around common childhood concerns and collect these in a shared bank of ideas and examples. The students are to read the poem and report back on what they think the meaning/intention is and to dig out any sub text they may feel underlies the words and phrases.A look at some of the literary devices is suggested.Students create their own character which is essentially an extension of themselves made into a fantasy invisible counterpart. Once armed with a finished character the poem creation will be a great deal easier as it acts as a concrete stimulus upon which to build their poem. The lesson plan asks that they include a repeated and adapted refrain to build up a sense of expectation and mood. This task addresses personal and social issues, art and literature and makes a great classroom display too.

Imagery, Metaphor, simile and visual vocabulary in a fun task to get to know each other

This is a lesson that I have run so many times and refined, it can be run with any year group in juniors just adapt it to suit.It makes a great"Let’s get to know one another" intro/task as the teacher has to"GO First" and discuss their own characteristics and personality traits before the class do.Basically the task uses imagery and language , specifically Metaphor and Simile to create an imaginary burger, it can be other things , a cake , a sandwich but edible options seem to be popular, and the ingredients are used to show who you are or aspects of who you are , likes , dislikes, hobbies, appearance or just about anything really. The fun part is mutual sharing and the ingenious solutions and ingredients the pupils come up with.Whilst the class are at the task it is good to share clever and innovative ideas and also get up on that display board and create a large but empty central burger for each"finisher" to select a filling of their own burger to add to the collective class burger, yours in their too please! Range the individual works around the main piece and discuss various things , commonalities , differences , surprises etc. Have fun with this one , the class will love it , after all everyone likes talking about themselves!

In our world of international conflict and daily "News Bites " of yet another crisis arising from perceived differences of culture, nationality and race it is difficult to shied our youngest from the relentless onslaught of negative media output.Never has it been so important to allow them to look at the other side of the coin where hope, kindness, sharing and cooperation across our borders between nations and their peoples. To this end The Author Nebras Hassan , a primary teacher herself, decided that she would speak up in a voice and genre that would reach the eyes , ears and hearts of our youngest in a way that is meaningful to them in a charming story that casts a positive eye upon our troubled times. The story centres around an alien mother and her young son preparing a cake for his upcoming birthday celebration.Discovering they have no eggs to bake the cake the pair of them set off on a journey to the planet Earth in search of eggs.During their exciting adventure across eight different countries and the continents of our planet they are met by kindness and although all our bakers are without eggs each offers “A Slice Of Cake” instead. As thy travel the globe the reader gets an introduction to the various greetings of each nationality and a little about the culture of each country. At the end of their journey they discover that the eight pieces together form a complete multi cultural cake and the eggs are not needed as the kindness of the collective citizens of earth has completed their task. This is a charming book illustrated by Terry Greenwell in bright and beautiful cartoon style pictures. As a springboard to discussion and classroom activities it is ideal and as an assembly centre piece it would be wonderful to watch. It is Nebras Hassan’s wish that as many children as possible see and hear this story to give voice to a powerful and much needed message to the world.

This is a quirky lesson that I have delivered countless times and fine tuned to its best.It comes to you straight from my sketch pad, hand written and drawn to reflect its content and aims. There is great art in here , brilliant and and meaningful speaking and listening and some expressive poetry around phrases using nouns and adjectives. It is a very popular lesson and will probably take up the bulk of a morning or all afternoon as it is quite a process to follow. However the results for display are super and speak loudly for themselves. There are opportunities to perform and share the results and the characters produced can be put into common resource file for pupils to select characters from and include in fictional stories( With the individual pupil’s permission) This can lead to great creative writing where the characters are owned by your class and those characters can populate linked stories. This one can go a long way once you and yours engage your imaginations , comics, graphic novels and so on all unique to your class, go on give it a go For lots more great creative ideas check out my book in my store available at a very reasonable cost as a pdf or paperback

In this document I show case some of my Illustrations from my book"What’s that all about then " and discuss the various ways that visual literacy and expression can back up and make even more meaningful literacy such as stories and poems in the classroom. Our junior students are more than familiar with comic book art , graphic novels and animation, it is a world they are comfortable in and so more likely to express themselves with confidence.I explore a handful of images from my book and talk about how I have combined word and picture to create a pleasing finished product that your pupils can emulate in their own creative work. For more great creative lit. and art ideas check out my book in my shop at 118 pages and in full colour l have priced it at a very reasonable price as both pdf and paperback and it is choc o bloc with relevant and humurous stories, pictures and poems all about being a kid. There is much curriculum relevant material inside!
