Geography River Long Profile OS map Hunt

(1)
A River long profile shows the changes to the river channel, valley and land use as it travels downstream. All GCSE Exam boards require in depth knowlege of the river long profile and require students to demonstrate proficient map skills. This worksheet based activity combines both knowlege and skills effectively and engages student with maps! Teaching River profiles no longer has to be dull and dry. I created this resource for year 9 in their first GCSE year and wanted to engage them in their learning. This activity works well in small groups huddled round and OS map- all the maps can be different, that’s the beauty of the questions, they are left open-ended. Hints and help are given on the worksheet and an OS water map symbols guide is included for reference. There are a variety of challenging extention activities for the more able. It could be the perfect task to do in association with a river based fieldwork trip, to familiarise students with their chosen river location and drainage basin.

Pond ecosystems depend on balance and equllibrium of all the interdependant parts that make it up; both the living ( biotic) and non-living ( abiotic). This lesson presumes you are lucky enough to have a pond on, or close to your school site to visit and carry out the field sketching tasks. However, if not, there is a detailed picture of a pond ecosystem on the slide they can copy if needed. Students start with a discussions, recap on producers, consumers and decomposers ( this lesson assumes a base-line understanding on food chains). Students sketch the pond with guidance and label appropriately using the mini-beasts spotter card to help them identify animals found on the pond, or through pond-dipping There is an exit card/ small write up task at the end.

free Geography Themed Christmas card KS3

The exchange of christmas cards is a long held tradition in and around December. Most people are fed up of getting the same old types of festive cards, so why not make a Geography themed one where the recipient also learns about how another country in the world celebrates Christmas? You can be sure that these will take pride of place on any mantlepiece or classroom display! This resources was originally designed for Ks3 years but can also easily be used for Ks2 in the juniors section of Primary School as the instructions to complete are clear and simple. Students will need access to an atlas or the internet to research their chosen country’s flag , country outline, and christmas traditions. If you have focussed on teaching a particular country or place this term you can easily adapt this card deisgn for that place. Students cut out readily available impages and festive themed borders to apply to their design, inside and out. They can write a normal christmas message or letter to Santa in the middle of the card as normal. Suitable for absolutely any ability and will keep your little cherubs busy in those lessons in December. I would love to see any example you have done! please post photo’s in the comments section.
