Science- Medium Term plan/ lesson - Changing Sound

(1)
The plan uses and refers to examples from Letts Science Book. To describe sounds using relevant vocabulary. To know that sounds are made when objects or materials vibrate. To make careful observations. To know that sound needs something to travel through. To know that sounds travel through solids, liquids and gases. To plan a test to measure or observe how well different materials muffle sound. To, through group discussion, plan a fair test. To know that stringed instruments make sound when the strings vibrate producing sound waves. To know the term ‘pitch’ describes how low or high sound is. To know that the pitch of a stringed instrument depends on the length, thickness and tightness of the string. To know that you can produce louder sounds by hitting or banging percussion instruments harder.

This is a fantastic resource if you are teaching phase 3 phonics. I have made the presentations for each sound. The way to teach it is: Introduce the new sound. 2- Name the pictures, teach the children by saying - I say, you say e.g. apple, then the children repeat the word apple. Repeat words e.g. apple, ant etc emphasizing the initials sounds with the picture cards e.g. a a a apple, a a a ant. 4.Then ask the children - At the beginning of (ant) I heard a … Again- Bounce initial sounds with pictures ‘a a a apple etc…’ 6.Ask chd-What phoneme do you hear at the beginning of … Once you have done the sounds SATPIN - then on the smart notebook files - there will be some words that you can add at latter part of the phonics session e.g. sat, tin etc, for children to write. The more able can write a sentence. Please Note - You must have smart notebook software to use this.
