A full unit focussing on heroes and villains through time, suitable for Key Stage 3 classes. Originally pitched at mid-range Year 8 but could be adapted for Year 7 or Year 9. There are 26 fully planned lessons complete with PowerPoints and resources, plus a bonus speaking and listening lesson as a 27th lesson that covers some performance ideas. Texts are covered in (roughly) chronological order and come from a range of fiction and non-fiction. Subjects include: Orpheus and Eurydice Izanami and Izanagi Hercules Sherlock Holmes Harry Potter The Hunger Games Sports stars including David Beckham Winston Churchill and war speeches The unit comes complete with all resources for each lesson. There are three assessment points in the unit, based on skills building towards studying AQA English Language at GCSE level.

Resources developed with the back-end of Year 11 in mind, to remind students of the key points for each question and act as a “walking talking” style chain of 4-5 lessons. I have also included a standalone lesson that introduces the concepts of focus and shift to students, which can be used as a fun way in to Question 3, using LEGO. The main PowerPoint also includes a lesson on writing creatively about deep sea creatures, using the Jaws extract as an exemplar.

A unit taking pupils through each of the poems in the Power and Conflict AQA cluster. Each lesson is broken into “Four Minutes of Focus” sections where pupils will learn the most important concepts for each poem, punctuated by linked tasks to suit all abilities and styles of learner.
