Fractions are FUN with this sort-count-write jellybean fraction activity kit!! Students will sort jellybeans to understand that fractions can be used to show the relationship of parts to a whole. And at the end of the lesson they'll enjoy gobbling up their sweet jellybean treat! Depending on the brand of jellybeans you purchase, there may be up to four, six or eight different colors in the bag. I've included templates to accommodate them all! I suggest you print off the templates and then laminate them for future use. Students will then use dry erase markers to record their findings. I've also included my "Jellybean Dominoes" game for your kiddos. 60 dominoes have both numerical fractions and jellybean picture fractions. My students LOVE regular dominoes, so they were absolutely delighted to play this jellybean fraction version! Included in this kit: - 3 bright, colorful jellybean recording templates (for 4, 6, or 8 colors) - for those who prefer to conserve printer ink... 3 white background jellybean recording templates - 60 jellybean dominoes (laminate and cut apart) If you wish to use a different kind of candy for the fraction activity, visit: Fractions: Fun with M&M's & Other Candies! BE SURE to pick up my Brain-based Fraction Chant that makes learning fractions oh-so easy! Wishing you and your mathematicians great success! Greetings, friends! I designed these writing materials to go along with the new Calkins Units of Study for writer’s workshop. Writing about reading is a wonderful unit that guides students through writing opinion letters about their favorite books and characters. As an extension to the unit, I have my students write a persuasive letter to a friend or family member of their choosing – trying to persuade them to read their favorite book. The writing planner assists students in choosing an audience, stating their opinion, and providing evidence from the text to support their opinion. This kit also includes fun letter writing stationery in 5 different designs to choose from. Each design has a letter-format first page, middle page, and closing page. Inspire those young authors with this engaging enrichment activity kit! tags - opinion letters, letter writing, Lucy Calkins write about reading, Lucy Calkins opinion writing Happy Writing!

Monster Math - an Art Project with Number Sense!

(0)
My students had a BALL with this project! Simple, easy, no-prep activity will bring out the number monsters in YOUR classroom! Step 1: Write the word "monster" on the whiteboard or smartboard in the center of the screen to create a mind map with the class. (Or draw a monster for visual appeal!) Step 2: Brainstorm with the class all the monster-related features they can think of... eyes, teeth, antennae, arms, legs, spots, stripes, ears, fangs, tongues, claws, etc. Write those words on the mind map to provide a visual cue for all students. Step 3: Give each student 5 index cards or 5 squares of paper to write on. Have them choose the top 5 monster features they wish to include in their monster art project and write one word on each index card. Step 4: Now have them turn the cards over (face down so they can't see the words) and tell them to mix up the order of the cards. Step 5: Distribute the "monster math" chart included in this kit and have them randomly select 1 card at a time to write the word in each of the boxes numbered 1-5. Step 6: Distribute colored construction paper and have students construct their monster according to the chart they created. These lil' monsters turned out SO cute and were a blast to have hanging in the halls! Wishing you the very best~ Julie

This 140-word kit is based on 2nd grade vocab words, but I've included an extra page of blank labels that allow you to modify your word wall to suit your grade level!
