What qualifications do I need to be a teacher at international schools?

The qualifications you need to teach internationally may differ based on the region and the type of international school you’re applying to. Whilst some may accept the standard British qualifications, other may require international qualifications or qualifications specific to their region. Learn more below.

How to become a teacher at British International Schools

To teach at a British International School, you will need: 

  • A bachelor’s degree 

  • A teaching qualification such as Qualified Teacher Status (QTS or iQTS) or the equivalent from your home country. In some countries, this may be a PGCE or Bachelor of Education (B. Ed) 

  • Strong English language skills 

  • A few years of teaching experience is highly beneficial; however, newly qualified teachers may also be accepted in some cases 

  • In some countries, you might need a teaching visa

How to become a teacher at International Baccalaureate (IB) Schools

To become qualified to teach at an IB school, you generally need: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in education or a related subject 

  • A valid teaching certificate or licence from your home country. For example, in England this would be QTS 

  • To complete IB-specific professional development such as IB Educator Certificates or IB Workshops 

  • Where possible, try to gain experience working in IB schools to better understand teaching in an IB context and IB pedagogy 

  • In some countries, you might need a teaching visa

How to become a teacher at American International Schools

To teach at American International Schools, you will usually need: 

  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in your teaching subject 

  • A recognised teaching certification (e.g. QTS in England) 

  • A minimum of two years’ teaching experience 

  • Sufficient English language proficiency 

  • In some countries, you might need a teaching visa

Your routes into teaching

There are various routes into teaching at international schools; here are just a few that lead to Qualified Teacher Status and/or are accepted at some international schools:

    iQTS

    Our International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) course will enable you to gain English qualified teacher status (QTS), and an optional iPGCE, from wherever you are in the world. It's a 10-month online and in-school international teacher training programme backed by the UK government.

    Our International Postgraduate Certificate in Education (iPGCE) is a Master's level, fully online course that will help you to upskill and take the next step in your international teaching career.

    Assessment Only

    Our Assessment Only route enables you to be independently assessed against the English Teachers’ Standards and gain qualified teacher status (QTS) within three months, without leaving your current school.

    Straight to Teaching

    Our Straight to Teaching course will prepare you for qualified teacher status (QTS) assessment via our Assessment Only route while you continue to work at your current school. It’s a high quality, low-cost route to becoming a qualified teacher that’s personalised to you and your school.
