I use this lesson with a mixed ability beginner Adult ESL Class. It is a complete lesson (maybe 2) on the topic of work and routines. It is my 2nd lesson on routines/present simple tense and Routines 2 is quite a bit more difficult than the original Routines which is more suited to total beginners.

The lesson is based on a text about the work routines of an aged care worker and involves lots of relevant vocabulary as well as practice of the present simple tense.

It covers a lot of elementary language and language skills:

•Reading and understanding simple text topics.

•Present simple tense – focusing especially on 3rd person forms

•Question forms – Yes/No and WH questions

•Vocabulary of work routines

•Speaking practice –asking and answering questions

•Writing simple sentences

There is plenty of opportunity to differentiate learning according to your students’ levels and needs. It may take 1 lesson or could take several lessons depending on your learners and how you present the material.

As in all my lessons, the language is presented in a context that is relevant to adult students with language that they will be able to use in their everyday lives. In this lesson the context is work.

This is a flexible lesson that can be used in a variety of ways:

•with a whole class,

• a small group or

• one to one

And for several different levels for different purposes

•with total beginners – supported by a lot of scaffolding by the teacher

•as an introduction to the present simple tense

•as diagnostic tool or

•as a review lesson tor ongoing students
