4 structured lessons covering topics from AS Chemistry Alcohols from the AQA Specification
Lesson 1: Properties of Alcohols
LO1: To identify and explain the intermolecular forces that are present in alcohol molecules
LO2: To explain the water solubility of alcohols, their low volatility and their trend in boiling points
LO3: To classify alcohols as primary, secondary or tertiary alcohols
Lesson 2 : The industrial Production of Ethanol and Biofuels
LO1: To describe the industrial synthesis of ethanol using mechanisms and equations (where applicable) by:
i) The hydration of ethene
ii) The fermentation of glucose
LO2: To construct equations to support the statement that ethanol produced by fermentation is a carbon neutral fuel and give reasons why this statement is not valid
LO3: To discuss the environmental (including ethical) issues linked to decision making about biofuel use.
Lesson 3: Oxidation of Alcohols
LO1: To know that alcohols can undergo combustion reactions in the presence of oxygen
LO2:To know alcohols can be oxidised by an oxidising agent called acidified potassium dichromate
LO3:To know the products and reaction conditions for the oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes and carboxylic acids
LO4:To know the products and reaction conditions for the oxidation of secondary alcohols to ketones
Lesson 4: Elimination Reaction of Alcohols
LO1: To know that alkenes can be formed from alcohols by acid-catalysed elimination reactions
LO2: To outline the mechanism for the elimination of water from alcohols
LO3: To understand that alkenes produced by this method can be used to produce addition polymers without using monomers derived from crude oil.
