Overview of how the number of bits impacts on different types of data representation:

  • numbers
  • images
  • sound
  • text/characters

Can be used as a recap in preparation for OCR GCSE 9-1: J277/01 - 1.2 Memory and storage unit.

Covers how the number of bits used changes the range of numbers that can be represented and leads on to looking at the other types of data covered in the spec. Reminds students that #bits relates to #colours available for each pixel etc. Rather than the common “improves quality”.

Images, sound, numbers, characters.
