This 23 page resource called “My Friendship Book” is great to use for children or individuals with an intellectual disability and/or autism. This booklet explores and includes the following:

  • What is friendship?
  • What is a friend?
  • How can I be a good friend?
  • What are good friend behaviours?
  • Frequently asked questions about friendships (friendships can be hard work sometimes, how to stay in touch, what can I talk to my friends about, how can I invite a friend to play with me, how long can a friendship last, can I still be friends with someone when they move away, how do I keep my friends once I have made them, I’ve had a fight with my friend, what can I do to resolve the situation, my friend is sick, what can I do to help them)
  • Addresses if you are a shy person (what you can do to make friends)
  • Unhelpful friend behaviours (what not to do)

Included is also a number of activities that can be completed independently and as part of a group or whole class activity. To support communication, visuals are included to help emphasize the key messages of the book.

This resource has been developed and utilized by numerous students in primary school who have difficulty with pro-social behaviours.
