Planning and resources for the Year 3 and 4 English national curriculum based around Satoshi Kitamura’s story, Stone Age Boy. Eight literacy sessions are planned for children to plan, draft and write, evaluate and edit their own adventure story using the structure, vocabulary and grammar of the Stone Age Boy story as a ‘master’ example.
The planning covers the following objectives from the English national curriculum:
to identify themes in stories
to participate in discussions about books, taking turns and listening to what others say
to discuss and record ideas
to organise paragraphs around a theme
to use simple organisational devices
to use vocabulary and grammar from a story when writing
to assess the effectiveness of my own and others writing and suggest improvements.
This resource is also available as part of a Stone Age bundle which also contains a DT textiles unit of work for the same topic, saving you 20% of the total cost.
Primary school assembly on the subject of hope, includes an assembly plan and a matching presentation. The assembly helps children to understand the meaning of the word 'hope', apply it to themselves and their own lives and then extend it to the wider world, including some famous figures that are driven by and inspire hope in others.
Children experiment with applique, running stitch, back stitch and over-sewing in this textiles unit of work. They design, plan and make a tabard-style Stone Age tunic for a teddy of their own from home. Finally, children evaluate their final product against their plan and look at textile artists in the UK.
My class loved this unit, they worked with such focus and I was very proud! Threading the needles was a bit tricky so I allocated some of my more able needle-threaders to tables to help sort out problems. One child sewed her tunic to her jumper, so warn your class about that classic mistake!

A range of Carroll Diagrams for the classification and sorting of information. Themes include categories such as odd/even numbers, in the 5 times table/not in the 5 times table which hit multiple maths curriculum targets in one activity. Alternatively, there are cross-curricular and popular culture themes, e.g. animals, Star Wars and Pop Artists.
National Curriculum:
- interpret and construct simple tables (Year 2)
- interpret and present data using tables (Year 3)
- identify and describe the properties of 2D shapes, including the number of sides and line symmetry in a vertical line (Year 2)
- identify right angles (Year 3)
- recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers (Year 2)
- use the language of more than, less than (Year 1)
Planning, PowerPoint and activities for an engaging poetry unit based around a Fire of London topic. My Year 2s produced some excellent quality poetry that they were very proud of. I have included two examples of the children's poems (before and after editing) that you could share with your class. Each planned lesson is accompanied by the resources required to deliver it. The unit touches on many objectives from the 2013 English National Curriculum (Key Stage 1) and the main ones are listed at the beginning of the planning document. There was a spelling and grammar focus of adding -ing to verbs and using expanded noun phrases. I hope your class enjoy it as much as we did!

One week’s worth of Year R mastery maths planning informed by the NCETM’s key areas of early mathematics learning and White Rose mastery principles. Printed and digital resources are included to facilitate delivery of the planning although you will also need some practical resources, e.g. duplo, beads, tens frames, Numicon.
The planning is based around a Traditional Tales/Jolly Postman topic however it is written in MS Word so that you can tweak it to suit your curriculum and practical equipment. For example, if you don’t have gems, you could use penny coins; if you were doing Supertato, you could use evil peas in a match box, etc…
A focus group runs throughout the week, rotating through the whole class, and these groups should be mixed ability in line with mastery principles. Notes for supporting less able pupils and extending more able pupils are included in the planning document. The remaining maths activities run all week, with extensions to bring in as the week progresses and the children become more competent at the key idea. Personally, I box up all the resources I’ll need for the week during PPA which makes it easy to bring out and put away the numbertime activities throughout the week.

This resource contains two files:
1. Making connections - children are encouraged to relate their own experiences to five different traditional tales.
2. Retelling - children are given a framework and some simple story vocabulary for retelling five different traditional tales. There is also a character and a speech bubble from each story where children can write recurring character phrases.

Primary school SMSC assembly plan and presentation based on the word ‘Spiritual’ and informed by the government’s advice document on promoting fundamental British values as part of Spiritual Moral Social and Cultural development in schools.
The assembly helps children to understand the meaning of the words ‘spiritual’ and ‘spirituality’ and that this can be, but is not exclusively, linked to religion and faith. They apply the concept to themselves first and then extend it to the wider world, in this case through a social story based on an incident that happened to a child in one of my classes a few years ago. There is a reflection at the end of the assembly for children to consider the importance of spirituality in their own lives and of respecting the beliefs of others.
Children choose the course of the story in this dynamic story-telling PowerPoint.
I originally wrote this for an assembly in National Storytelling Week and had huge fun with the whole school choosing which characters, setting and plot developments to follow. The children showed me via hands on heads or crossed arms which options they wanted to pick. The children were incredibly excited and engaged; I really enjoyed the assembly.
If you miss off the first two slides about National Storytelling Week, this resource could also be used in an English lesson to look at story structure, character, setting and/or the use of descriptive language, e.g. adjectives and similes. Or simply use it in class as an enjoyable story to revisit and retell, allowing the children to make different choices to build a different story.
I’ve tested the PowerPoint thoroughly (including in assembly and at home with my own daughter!) as there are a lot of action buttons to click on that lead you to the next slide in the chosen story. However, if I’ve missed anything, please do contact me via TES conversations and I will straighten it out asap.

11 session unit of work with a grammar focus of question marks and exclamation marks based on Julia Donaldson's 'Room on the Broom'. Children make their own character puppets and perform a play, generating lots of talk for writing. The planning was created for the Year 1 curriculum but is equally valid for Year 2 work on exclamations, questions and statements.
This resource includes:
- A comprehensive planning document including suggestions for cutaways, pullbacks, guided reading activities and differentiation.

Have fun practising subitising with your class with this festive maths mastery game for the interactive whiteboard!
Subitising is the ability to instantly count a small quantity without needing to count each individual item and plays an important part in early ‘number sense’, building solid foundations for later addition and subtraction.
This PowerPoint resource contains 5 variations of the subitising game, including less Christmassy versions (snow foxes, gingerbread men and brussel sprouts).
In the game, between 1 and 6 objects are displayed briefly on the screen and the children have to subitise (count instantaneously) how many objects they have seen. The images and the corresponding number are shown when you are ready by clicking the slide. I get my class to write their answer on an individual whiteboard before we check it on the big screen.
The first 3 versions contain regular patterns of the numbers 1 - 6 (as you would see on a dice) for perceptual subitising and the final 2 versions contain irregular arrangements to support the development of conceptual subitising.
My Year R class love these animated slides and I hope your children enjoy them too!
