Card Sort - 'Constructive' Verses 'Destructive' Waves

This activity has been carefully designed to help students assess understand the differences between constructive and destructive waves and be used along side any main stream textbook or video. Once complete students should be able to attempt a question on ‘compare the characteristics of constructive and destructive waves.’ When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a fully editable Microsoft document which includes a learning objective, instructions, two heading cards labelled ‘Constructive’ and ‘Destructive’ waves as well as fourteen information cards and two diagrams that be sorted under them. This resource makes a great starter or plenary to be completed in pairs or groups. It can be cut up by the students or placed into envelopes for use with several classes or even set as a piece of homework. Alternatively, your students could draw a table with the two headings ‘Constructive’ or ‘Destructive’ and copy out the information under them. This issue of abortion is a controversial subject, which has to be handled with sensitivity. On the one side we have pro choice who advocate abortion as key to women achieving equality with men, whilst on the other we have pro life who argue that far from helping women achieve equality it actually allows society to continue to ignore the issues that face women such as equal pay, childcare and promotion on merit. This outstanding resources has been tried and tested in the classroom over many years and aims to help students understand some of the main arguments for and against abortion. It can be used as a starter, plenary or main activity to accompany any main stream text book or resource on this topic. The nature of the task means that it appeals to the full range of ability. The main activity involves getting students to cut out the cards in lesson, organize them into their most persuasive order under the two main headings and then sick them into their books. Once students have fed back their results to a class discussion, they can then have a go at the extended writing activity. Alternatively, they can create a key and then sort through the cards and then stick the sheet into their book or you could cut out the cards and place them into an envelope for them to sort prior to a discussion on the topic. This is a great resource that can be easily adapted to suit your classroom and expectations. American West: The Gold Rush

These outstanding resources has been a labour of love on what I have often felt is a truly fascinating turning point in history, the Gold Rush 1848 - 1850s. I have spared no expense in time and effort in trying to produce what I feel is a world class resource. However, don’t take my word for it and check it out for yourself and see what you think. It forms a series of resources that I have written for my students on the American West. When you purchase this resource you will be supplied with a PowerPoint and an accompanying card sort on the consequences of the gold rush for different groups living in the American West. The PowerPoint contains the aims and objectives as well as six activities, including a snowballing starter of the key words, a source based analysis question on the short term consequences, a source annotation exercise, two thinking skills graphic organisers that try students to explain the importance of each stage of the gold rush as well as come to an overall conclusion on the negative and positive consequences for different groups living in the American West. I have also included an exam style question with a pupil mark scheme to help students structure a balanced answer. The card sort includes statements on the impact of the gold rush on different groups in western society, law and order, the economy and expansion of the US. Additional tasks get students to review which consequences were positive or negative for different groups. This should be used alongside the PowerPoint. This outstanding resource has been designed to help students looking in depth at the historical controversy over President Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan in 1945. At the time the USA claimed that the decision to drop the bomb on Japan was based on military factors. This resources presents students with the primary, secondary and key information to compare this interpretation with three others including to scare the USSR, test the weapon, revenge for Pear Harbor and come to a balanced independent conclusion. The resources and text level would suit a middle to upper ability group and could be used as a class or extended homework based resource. There is enough work and activity to last between 3/4 lessons for a middle ability class. This is a depth study which allows students to weigh up the evidence, compare sources and come to a reasoned assessment which form the basis for an essay. This great resource has been tried and tested over 25 years and looks at the causes and results of the Protestant Reformation. However, before you look away, this resource is designed to suit the full range of learning abilities that you would find in a main stream school. Some of you may even recognise parts of this resource from an older version, which I have now updated, from school history, that was downloaded over 400,000 times. This is a must have resource! The PowerPoint includes 5 activities. The first activity is a snowballing starter using all the key words in the lesson. The second activity gets students to annotate / label a medieval painting of purgatory. This will hopefully lead to a class discussion on ideas about Heaven and Hell. The third activity is to update and correct their labelling with purple pen. There then follows a series of slides and links to video clips explaining medieval ideas on relics, indulgences (Pardons) and Martin Luther’s role in challenging them. This is all done simply at a level that main stream students can understand. The fourth activity, gets students to design their own Wittenberg Poster using Martin Luther’s ideas. This can be completed and aged for homework using tea bags or coffee and makes an excellent classroom display. 1000s of my students have completed this task and loved it! The final activity, which might take a second lesson, gets students to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between a Catholic and a Protestant Church. This outstanding lesson on slave resistance looks at the different ways in which Black people challenged slavery. It also tries to answer the difficult question about why some people did not try and run away by contextualising the learning and looking at the experiences of former veterans and prisoners who have struggled to cope with adjusting to an unstructured life of freedom. Unlike other resources on this topic, this lesson also looks at the contrasting experiences of Black people in the USA, Jamaica and Haiti and how they had to adjust the way in which they resisted slavery to suit the problems and different challenges they faced. Finally, this lesson poses the question, how successful was slave resistance and links it’s importance to the abolition debate. Did you know that more British soldiers died trying to maintain slavery in the Caribbean, than died fighting to free Europe from Napoleon? This classic resource has been created to help students assess the different factors which helped the RAF win the Battle of Britain in 1940. It can be used to help prepare students for an assessment or to lightly touch this popular topic if you are short for curriculum time. It is designed to be used with the full range of ability and to work alongside any main stream text book or video on this topic. For those who are busy or don’t have access to these resources, I have included two suitable links to video clips on YouTube. You can also download a detailed PowerPoint and worksheet on the Battle of Britain from our TES shop along with a SEND version of this card sort. When you purchase this resource, you will be able to download a two-page word document which includes a learning objective, instructions, four heading cards labelled 'Technology’, ‘Leadership’, ‘Tactics’ and ‘Organisation’ as well as 25 statement cards that can be cut out and sorted under them. If you are looking to shorten the time spent on the card sort, you could cut out the cards and keep them in envelopes for students to take out and sort, or you could instead create a colour key to help them identify which headings they wanted to sort them under. Page two of the card sort includes six cards which could be left out if you want to save on photocopying or wish to use them as an extension for those who finish early. Once students have completed the card sort, there is a second activity which gets them to write an extended answer to the core question. I would recommend getting your students to use the headings from the card short to help them organise their answer. This great interactive activity has been designed as a consolidation or revision activity with GCSE or A Level Students studying the digestive system. It is aimed at middle to higher ability students, although with support it could be used with KS3 or lower ability students. The card sort can be used in a number of different ways, but I generally get my students to at first cut out or colour code the heading cards and then sort the matching information cards on the digestive system. They then share their answers and we briefly review their answers at this stage. In the next stage of the lesson, I then ask them then organise the information into the correct columns in their books to show how the digestive system works. If necessary we might again review their answers before we stick the cards down. Finally, I then ask them to create and produce their own revision flash cards using the information from the card sort and the main class text book. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a two page Word Document which can be edited and customised for your students. It contains instructions, a learning objective, 6 heading cards and 31 information which can be sorted to decribe how the digestion system works. This great resource is designed to be used a stand alone lesson or to be printed off in colour, laminated and displayed in your classroom. If you are looking for a fun, interactive revision game on the Russian Revolution, that can be used as a starter or plenary then this resource for you. It particularly good at injecting a bit of competition which will draw in some of those under achieving students, especially the boys who might be very good at learning key facts via a game. They can also be used by students as revision flash cards. There are three main ways that you can use them. Game 1 involves getting students to read out the key words until the other guesses the topic correctly. Game 2 involves additional challenge and stretch by getting students to describe the topic without using any of the key words on the card. The third game, which adds an additional layer of fun or challenge involves playing a round of Pictionary or Charades. I normally give my students 3 minutes of each round to help activate the learning and warm up the class. You could also have a freestyle round where students decide which game they want to play linked to their learning style. If you are trying to engage some under achieving boys, add some competition and get them to keep score in the back of their books. I would recommend printing them off on card and getting your students to cut them out. Then put the cards into an envelope for class use. If you are a student then keep them in your pocket and use them as a flash card to help you learn the key facts, If there is a term that you do not understand then as your teacher or do some extra research. From a revision perspective, you can print off the cards and get your students to learn the key words for a test or for their exams. These are a win, win resource. This fun and interactive market place activity has been designed around helping students investigate Roman entertainment and leisure. You can either pin the information to the classroom walls or give each group an information pack containing the relevant slides so that they can collaborate and share what they have learnt. This task is designed to get them out of their chairs, moving around and working together. This fun and interactive lesson looks at the different role played by women in medieval society from Nicola de la Haie’s defence of Lincoln Castle to the many forgotten stories of women working in hospitals or as apprentices in medieval towns. This important lesson focuses on trying to challenge the traditional interpretation of medieval women as primarily as caregivers responsible for their families. Instead, it explores how these women asserted themselves, gained influence, and exercised agency in various aspects of medieval life. Once the gather and share has been completed, students can feedback their results to a class discussion or mark and improve their answers using the heads and tails activity we especially created to provide extra support. ’When giving feedback to A Level Students studying history it is important to be specific about what the student did well and where they need improvement. Is crucial to point out specific examples and illustrate your points by linking them to the assessment objectives.' It can be difficult to maintain a work life balance when you have a pile of A Level essays to mark. If you like me find yourself annotating work and writing your own mini essay in response to your students work, then the history academy might just have the solution you are looking for. The attached essay and source feedback sheets are designed to help you provide effective next steps feedback and save you time. When you purchase these resources, you will be able to download two feedback mark schemes for Section A and B of the AQA A Level History Syllabus. The first page of both the source and the essay feedback sheets contains a grid which breaks down the assessment objectives for each level. You simply highlight, tick and underline what the student has achieved. By looking at the next level, your students can see what they need to do next in order to improve their work. The second page contains a table with a space for writing a quick summary and then two sections saying ‘areas for praise’ and ‘areas for improvement.’ At the bottom of the page is a section for the students to write their response to your feedback. Both documents have been provided in Word and as a PDF. When completing these sheets, I usually type up my comments or occasionally copy and paste statements into the relevant boxes. I keep a copy saved in the students folder and attach a physical copy to their essay. This beautifully illustrated lesson looks at the problems facing farmers in 1750 and the solutions that they had found by 1850. It also aims to get students to assess who were the winners and loses and introduces some of the themes that you may want to follow up later on protest and population movement. The young, dashing Charles Stuart stands out from the historical record and demands closer examination. To some he is a romantic hero who represented the rebirth of an independent Scotland, whilst to others he was simply the lackey of the French King who was sent over to destabilize Britain, whilst she was at war with France.
