A two-week plan using the story of Supertato by Sue Hendra as a stimulus. The children explore the feelings of the different characters, create a character description of Supertato and Evil Pea, learn the story of Supertato using Talk for Writing, and eventually write their own story featuring their own supermarket villain! All resources are included: two weeks of planning (including SPAG), flipchart files, worksheets, visual prompts and LO/SC headers for written outcomes.
A worksheet to be used after exploring the key features of a postcard. Children will read an example postcard and annotate the features they find to demonstrate their understanding. I used these differentiated worksheets with a Year 2 class, but they could very easily be adapted to suit LKS2. This activity is part of a unit of work around Man on the Moon by Simon Bartram. Reading comprehension questions based on Roald Dahl’s The Minpins - differentiated four ways! This resource was planned and delivered for a Year 3 class, but could easily be used for KS1, UKS2 and lower ability KS3.
Comprehensive planning based around The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. The children make predictions about the story whilst reading, answer differentiated comprehension questions to demonstrate their understanding of the text, learn the story using T4W and then produce a story board of the main events. The final written outcome is a diary entry from the perspective of the main character, Mr Grinling, using differentiated success criteria and a pre-prepared WAGOLL. The children begin to understand what a ‘hero’ is and make links to historical figures who can be thought of as heroes. This download includes five weeks of detailed and engaging planning and resources, including SPAG. I used these activities with a Year 2 class, but they could easily be adapted to suit Year 1 or LKS2. For this unit, pupils are involved in writing for ‘real’ purposes using the fiction book: Man On The Moon by Simon Bartram. Pupils are asked to help Bob with various tasks that demand using and applying the text types they will have explored in Year 1 as well as being introduced to new forms of writing. By the end of the unit, the children will have produced a postcard, instruction text, character description, recount and information text with glossary.

A fossilisation task differentiated two ways: HA/MA children should order the images and use a word bank to write a description for each stage of the fossilisation process, LA children should complete the paragraphs using the word bank. Also includes an extension activity where children apply their knowledge and understanding of fossils and the fossilisation process to answer test-style questions.

A Britain’s Got Talent-style script featuring different characters from a range of myths and legends, including Hades, Cyclops, Perseus, Medusa and the Minotaur! My Year 5 class performed this as a radio program after a unit on Myths and Legends in English, but it could easily be used with younger and older children as a class assembly.
