This is a complete unit of work for a Y1/2 class, aimed at the top end and differentiated. It can easily be made longer or shorter to suit. I have added a few resources that are helpful for some of the lessons, easily editable. We got some great writing from this and there are lots of opportunities for short burst writes and adding writing to your displays. A complete 3 week unit of work for Non-Fiction (for Fiction see my other unit on the Dragon Machine). Based on the book ‘Tell me a Dragon’ and accompanying notes from Pie Corbett (see T4W website- this document is not included but is free to download there) This unit of work is for Y1/2, aimed at the top end of Y2 and differentiated. There are lots of resources, worksheets and flipchart examples included to help support the teaching of this unit. It has a big talk for writing focus and we have produced some fantastic writing as a result. There are lots of writing opportunities built in, not just an end of unit write. You will hopefully get lots of short burst writing of good quality, linked to this text. Easily editable and adaptable to different class sizes, age groups and term length. Combined with my Fiction planning it will cover a whole 5-6 week term.

These activities are suited to KS2 for guided reading sessions or for use in English lessons to show response to the text. 4 different worksheets with boxes for ‘wonder’, ‘observe’ and ‘infer’ (the 4 images are different ones from the book) Wonder- Children write questions that come to mind when they look at the image Observe - What can they see - be specific, expand your ideas, explain clearly Infer- Children make inferences using clues from the image 1 worksheet comparing an image of a child from the past with the boy in the story. Encouraging children’s use of inference and also to encourage them to explore the differences between the characters. I will be uploading planning and resources for my entire Flotsam unit shortly. A plan for Y2 and top end of Y1. This is a 3 week Fiction unit of work based on T4W using a skills ladder and modelled text. If you don’t know this story, it is a really good one! There are resources included to help with the teaching and delivery of this unit of work. I have also included flipcharts with various screens to save you time! I also have a Non-Fiction unit of work available on my TES shop so check out my other resources. This unit is perfect for summer term, especially when gathering evidence for possible moderation. You will see in the plan how I have targeted certain children as a focus in certain lessons (XXXX).

A 3 week unit of work for Year 1 based on the Gingerbread Man. Narrative and Non-fiction. 2 weeks focusing on narrative and then 1 week on instructions. This plan can easily be stretched to 4 weeks as I tend to block my lessons to get more done, especially when doing a longer write with Year 1. I have provided most of the resources you will need to teach this unit but not included flipcharts as everyone teaches differently and some prefer powerpoint not ActivPrimary. Before this unit, I sent requests to parents and friends to ask them to send poststcards to school as it linked to our Geography for the term.

A seasonal2 week unit of work based on the story ‘Pumpkin Soup’ by Helen Cooper in a T4W style. The children will have various opportunities for writing and grammar focus within the unit, ending with writing an innovated version of the original story. This short 1 week unit can be easily adapted to your class and timescale. A running record for use in KS1 to assess reading at EXS. The running record has accompanying comprehension questions for the child to answer as part of the assessment. There is an additional worksheet for use with WTS children based on making inferences. This could also be used as a whole class guided reading activity. I have also included a PPT workbook with images and text from the story with questions if you do not have the book.

A complete plan for 3 weeks fiction and a complete plan for 2 weeks non-fiction, based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The objectives cover both Year 1 and Year 2 ARE. In the 3 week plan you will see how the work is covered across the 3 weeks, using Talk for Writing as a basis of our work. One of the lessons on the plan is linked to our topic work, where we complete cross-curricular writing to hit our English objectives. This would be easily adaptable to your own topic. This MTP is for 5 weeks to cover the ‘Home learning’ period whilst we are off school due to the Coronavirus outbreak. It is aimed at KS1 but you could easily edit and adapt to suit other year groups. I have tried to add in websites and links where appropriate to help support children and parents working at home. I hope you find this a useful document!
