This investigation is based around Breaking Bad. Students complete a practical making magnesium sulphate (I've called it 'white') and calculate the percentage yield. The group with the highest yield wins but watch out for cheating!

A simple game of top trumps which the students make. This is designed for students to make cards on computers and print them out to play. It can also be done by hand if you print the templates off. In groups of 5, each student makes 4 cards (use the groups slips to allocate elements). I have restricted it to the first 20 elements, but obviously you can extend it if you want bigger sets. Then print off and play - see the instructions for more details.

This is suitable for end-of-year revision for weaker students. Instructions: BEFORE LESSON 1. Print out the posters on A3 2. Print out the worksheets 1 per pupil 3. Print out the cards, cut out and put them on desks along with the corresponding poster DURING LESSON 1. Give out worksheets, students move to different posters/cards 2. They arrange the cards on the poster. When it has been checked, they copy this onto their own worksheets.

A websheet to support student research into metal extraction. Upload this to your VLE and students complete and print for their notes. They need to press ctrl and click the links to open the websites.

This is a homework or independent research task where students use the website given to locate the information. It summarises properties of diamond and graphite, and included fullerene and nanoparticles.

Instead of drawing hundreds of electrons, this resource presents the electron arrangements for the first 20 elements which students first identify, then arrange onto their periodic table. Much neater, and less chance of mistakes. Print out SINGLE SIDED so students can cut out the cards on page 1 and arrange them into the periodic table on page 2.
