This resource summarises the four statistical tests required for A level biology (Standard Deviation, T-test, Spearman Rank, Chi-squared). There is a practice question and mark scheme for each test. The questions are Edexcel SNAB but hopefully they’re relevant to other boards.

Simple web-based research task (includes links - hold down CTRL to open links in document)

This investigation is based around Breaking Bad. Students complete a practical making magnesium sulphate (I've called it 'white') and calculate the percentage yield. The group with the highest yield wins but watch out for cheating!

This activity is adapted from a Kings' College resource and develops argumentation skills. It is also a good summary of the differences between plant and animal cells and an introduction to classification.

Similar to the one I created for unit 1, this is taken from the spec and should be useful for revision. I printed it as an A4 booklet and I added a blank revision timetable on the final page.

A simple game of top trumps which the students make. This is designed for students to make cards on computers and print them out to play. It can also be done by hand if you print the templates off. In groups of 5, each student makes 4 cards (use the groups slips to allocate elements). I have restricted it to the first 20 elements, but obviously you can extend it if you want bigger sets. Then print off and play - see the instructions for more details.

I've taken each of the longer (5/6 mark) questions from aqa papers and put them into this PowerPoint. Students practice each question under timed conditions (timer on each slide - click on the box to activate. Give 5 mins for each question). Then use the mark scheme to mark/feedback.

Worksheet reviewing diffusion and osmosis, and covers active transport.

This is the first lesson of a unit to mark the 2012 Olympics. Each lesson focusses on an olympic event and links it to scientific concepts. I will upload as I write them! Lesson 1 is the 100m sprint and reaction times. The practical requires computers (ideally laptops - one per group) but can be done as a whole class activity with the IWB. One worksheet is to accompany the practical, the other is a homework activity on graphs and data analysis.

A sheet covering the first part of the B2 unit (digestion, enzymes, organisation, heart, blood)

I couldn't find a decent summary anywhere so I made this worksheet. I don&'t think students need to know too many details for AQA Unit 1 so hopefully this will be useful. Please let me know if I&';ve missed anything or made any mistakes.

This exercise describes examples of positive and negative feedback loops in biology. Students look at each example and: a) decide if it describes positive or negative feedback b) summarise the process in a flow diagram

This is suitable for end-of-year revision for weaker students. Instructions: BEFORE LESSON 1. Print out the posters on A3 2. Print out the worksheets 1 per pupil 3. Print out the cards, cut out and put them on desks along with the corresponding poster DURING LESSON 1. Give out worksheets, students move to different posters/cards 2. They arrange the cards on the poster. When it has been checked, they copy this onto their own worksheets.
