A PowerPoint presentation taking students through the summary question on the new GCSE AQA specification. Sources used are ‘Touching the Void’ and an extract from Scott’s diary.

A carousel activity aimed to take a lesson of 1 hour. Using key letters, students answer a range of questions to annotate some of the key moments from the novel. The questions are focused on the Assessment Objectives for AQA A Level English Literature: Paper 2B: Texts in Shared Contexts: Modern Times: Literature from 1945 to the Present Day (Drama and Prose Contextual Linking) Some comparisons are made with 'A Streetcar Name Desire', but these could be easily edited to the play of your choice. (The letters aren't included, I photocopied the extracts from the novel onto A3 for my classes). You could repeat the activity with different letters.

This resource is a colourful A3 activity sheet which takes students through the poem in a way which requires them to think about the effect of Byron's choices, without giving them 'the answers'. Could be used as an independent task as an introduction to the poem or unseen poetry practice, or could be completed in small groups or pairs as a discussion tool. Could also be a useful revision tool.

A PowerPoint presentation designed for the new AQA English Literature at A Level. Information about the novel’s background is provided, links to wider reading and a group/independent task is included too, to provide a varied couple of lessons. It will take me 3 x 1 hour lessons with mixed ability year 12, including an hour for them to work together to make their own links (with guided questions). A PowerPoint taking students through this important scene. It includes a number of activities including drama tasks, language analysis tasks, creative writing, a chat show and a storyboarding activity. Should keep them busy for a while! I use this with mixed ability year 8 classes, but it might work for lower ability ks4 ( though you might miss some of the tasks out/adapt them).

A great pre-reading activity based on Macbeth. Students simulate being in a police investigation and try to uncover the identity of a missing woman based on the things she has said and done. (It’s Lady Macbeth). Students work in groups, in role, which makes for an excellent speaking and listening activity, as well as a great introduction to the play. (It works best when you’ve not done anything with them on the play).

A very visual activity which takes students through comparing the imagery of the two poems. Focused on student discussion and interpretation and leading to a short writing task. An hour long lesson. Created for AQA GCSE English Literature Paper 2

Created for A-level ENGLISH LITERATURE A (7712/2B) Paper 2B: Texts in Shared Contexts: Modern Times: Literature from 1945 to the Present Day , Option 1, this is an example modern unseen extract taken from Ralph Ellison’s 'Invisible Man’ and includes a question on the extract itself, and the follow up question where students need to compare prose and drama.

Two PowerPoint presentations outlining the context of the Romantic period and what came before. Teacher notes included on the notes page. Could culminate in an independent/group research task into the 'big six' Romantic poets.

Three setting-based extracts from the novel presented on A3. Can be used as a carousel activity for students to annotate for language features, or as group annotation activity.

A PowerPoint to help Key Stage 3/Lower ability Key Stage 4 practice questions 1 and 2 of the AQA English Language Paper 1 Reading section. The stimulus material is from War Horse (the questions themselves and the extracts are from another free resource I found on TES). I’ve broken the extract up to allow for discussion and annotation on the board and have popped half of a level 4 response on there to get them going.

A worksheet to prompt A Level/GCSE students to plan and present a 'Jerry Springer' style talk show based on 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' and/or 'The Great Gatsby'

A short PowerPoint (9 slides) explaining the epistolary form and the structure of the novel. The resource considers the way the letters start and end, as well some of the novel’s motifs and symbols. Works as a lesson and includes an independent task at the end, suitable for remote learning.
