A Social Narrative is an effective way to teach children how to navigate a new situation, such as starting school or preschool or in this instance learning to go to school ‘virtually’. Social Narratives can help children understand what to expect at school or preschool. Encouraging children to try using independence in problem solving in situations where safety is a prime concern, is a common social skill that needs to be frequently addressed.  As educators we need to explicitly teach these skills. This story can be used to help children to broaden their technology skills and learn to work in a new learning environment away from school.

How to use this resource Subitising is the ability to recognise patterns of dots instantly without having to count them. This is integrated into the Early Mathematical framework as a basis for building further strategic thinking after the Emergent Stage. Counting by ones can often be a strategy that can be a hard one to shift with some learners. Ongoing exposure to these regular patterns can be useful to lead on to more complex strategies. The following cards are an extension of this basic concept, the students look for those patterns within a larger group in order to get a notion of combining groups of patterns in order to ‘see’ a larger number without having to count. The following video is an excellent example of how to open discussions with your students and encourage them to explain their mathematical thinking. Experiment with shapes and mirrors and explore how a kaleidoscope actually works. Lateral Thinking Puzzles are a great way to start a lesson or use as a brain break. Have them on Interactive Whiteboard displayed as a classroom entry activity.
