Basic Equation Solving - Legends of the Hidden Shrine

(0)
Let your students practice their equation solving skills by having them work through problems to try and escape the hidden shrine. Students will solve equations that will lead them to different pieces of the amulet. Once students have found all the pieces of the amulet they must put them together for victory. Watch out though, if you choose the wrong answer, you may be caught by the hidden monkey guards! This practice will require students to use their knowledge of basic equation solving. Each challenge will require a different set of skills. Students will need to solve basic two step equations, combine like terms, and use inverses for solving with fractions. Vertical Motion Exploration Math Lab - Discovering through Inquiry

(0)
Do you have those students that always ask about how this relates to real life? This math lab is the solution. Students will work through an experiment just like they would in science class to discover through self-inquiry that vertical motion is best represented with parabolas and quadratic functions. The experiment allows students to discover this phenomena through inquiry and data collection. After collecting data, students will have their “a-ha” moment. Students will quickly be able to see where initial height and initial velocity fit in to the model. This experiment also leaves the opportunity to discuss as much basic physics as you want (absolutely not necessary for a quality lesson). This experiment will take a little time to set up but it will all be worth it when your students are genuinely excited when you tell them they are doing an experiment in math class. We have included a lot of notes throughout the teacher guide to help implementation. If you download the item and need clarification or have questions, do not hesitate to email us. Absolute Value Function Characteristics Scavenger Hunt

(0)
This 9 poster scavenger hunt requires students to analyze information related to the graphs of linear absolute value functions. Students are required to use knowledge of absolute minimum/maximum, intervals of increase/decrease, domain and range. Students are given a sheet with 9 questions. Each question has characteristics of a certain absolute value graph. Students will search the posters to find the graph that matches all the characteristics on their paper. Students will then write the poster letter on their paper.

X- and Y-Intercept Matching Activity (CCSS.HSF.IF.B.4)

(0)
This matching activity is designed to be practice for students in finding the x- and y-intercepts of a graph and from an equation. Students will have to use critical thinking skills in order to match the three sets. Finding intercepts is a difficult task for students to attain. This practice will help students see the relation between an ordered pair, equation of a line and a graphed line.

Balancing a checkbook and writing checks

(0)
This is a multi-layered lesson designed to teach and aid students in writing checks and balancing checkbooks. Students are walked through each step of writing a check and practice on their own. Afterwards, students are lead through the process of balancing a checkbook followed by independent practice. Included in the download are two publisher files for instruction and practice and a powerpoint. The powerpoint can easily be adapted for your lesson but gives the framework for the lessons.

Soccer Linear Modeling Project (CCSS.HSF.LE.A.1)

This class project is sure to be a hit with any and all of your students! Students have been hired as consultants for the Real Madrid Football Club to solve some team problems. Students must use the provided data to create a linear regression (line of best fit, least squares equation) in order to determine a correlation coefficient. Afterwards, students identify residuals for each piece of data. After collecting all the necessary information, students are led through questions related to the organization. When I did this in class I gave all three (3 similar projects all found on our page) and let them choose. The choices were mixed and the students loved that they were able to individualize the days lesson depending on their interests. After students were finished each group received a reporting form. This is the form the "consultants" would hand their employer to summarize their findings. This was absolutely a hit in our class! We have actually created three similar scenarios to cover the same information. If you want all three projects I have bundled each for just 5.99!

Complex Numbers Scavenger Hunt

This great activity is a self-checking loop of problems. This set is all to do with complex numbers (see thumbnails for examples. Students choose to start with any question they'd like, determine the answer, and look for it around the room. Once they find the answer, they complete the question on that specific page. The questions are in a big loop so when the student returns back to their original page, they are finished. This is a fantastic way to have a self-checking review. Students know immediately if they did something wrong with their calculations. It also allows students to spread out and work at their own pace.
Counting Coins Game

Counting Coins Game

(0)
This game requires and teaches students to identify 5 pennies equals a nickel, 2 nickels equal a dime and 2 dimes and a nickel equal a quarter. Directions: Student rolls a die and takes the same number of pennies as they rolled. Student places the penny on the board and "trades in" for a nickel at 5 pennies. At two nickels the student "trades in" for a quarter. We usually play up to a $1.00 or whomever has the most quarters at the end of time. This game is also a great sponge activity for those extra few minutes you need to have something for student learning.

Trig Ratios Stations (CCSS.HSF.TF.B.7)

(0)
This is a set of 10 stations requiring students to determine unknown side lengths or angles. QR codes are provided on each station for students to check their answers. Our students also needed extra practice identifying the proper sides of a triangle so that is included as well on 5 stations. We had our students start with these 5 first to make sure their understanding of triangle sides was adequate. This lesson was a resounding success on reviewing and practicing unknown side lengths and angles. Students were required to use sine, cosine and tangent. They will also need to know the inverse functions to solve for the unknown angles. You may also like: Unit Circle Values Scavenger Hunt Complex Number Scavenger Hunt nth Roots Scavenger Hunt

Converting Between Radians and Degrees Scavenger Hunt (CCSS.HSF.TF.A)

(0)
Students will be required to convert radians to degrees or degrees to radians. Students will start at any poster they want, solve the question and look for the answer around the room. If done correctly, students will end up back at the same poster. This is a great practice and review as it promotes self-checking and understanding of the content. We have only had success with scavenger hunts in our classroom.

This 15 poster scavenger hunt requires students to examine the characteristics of linear function graphs. Have students analyze a question and find the graph that matches the information. Students will: Determine the x and y-intercepts for a linear equation written in standard form. After finding the information, students will find the graph that matches their intercepts. Students will write down the correct letter on their answer sheet. Extension idea - Have students rewrite the equation in slope-intercept form. This is a great review of intercepts from standard form after instruction or before a test.

Clue! Quadratic Functions - Vertex, Factoring, Quadratic Form. Word Problems, Graphing

(0)
A quadratic function take on the classic game of clue! Can you solve the clues to determine the suspect, accomplice, room and weapon? Students will work through 4 clues: Your students will use knowledge of finding a vertex, factoring, using the quadratic formula, solving word problems and graphing parabolas. Students will record their answers on their clue sheet to reveal the final solution. Students are given a cipher to turn their number answers into letters. Cut out both circles and spin the numbers to match the appropriate letter. Students are also provided a score sheet, just like the game, so they can mark off their final answer. Have them turn in their answers and work to see if they’ve found all the right information! Follow our Pinterest Boards!

This activity is a real world application for finding the percent of a number/whole. The "store" is throwing a sale and items are 10, 25, 50 and 75% off. Students walk around the "store" and determine original cost, percent off, new price and amount saved. This activity can be used as an assessment, practice, review or extension activity for finding the percent of a number. A lesson plan is included with store items and note sheet.

Multiplying Complex Numbers Scavenger Hunt

(0)
This 10 poster scavenger hunt requires students to use knowledge of imaginary and complex numbers and simplify using the distributive property. Students can start at any poster and simplify the expression. Once they have an answer they will look around the room for the poster with the matching answer. Students repeat the process until they get back to their original poster. Why do students and teachers love this? Students get automatic feedback on their work using scavenger hunts. We've had nothing but success using this lesson as a review for a quiz/test or as extra practice after introducing complex numbers.
