During this week the children will get to know Howard Carter through a monologue; be introduced to King Tutankhamen (including photographs of replica artifacts taken from the tomb); have a formal debate: whether they think King Tutankhamen’s tomb should have been opened or not and be introduced to ‘Secrets of a Sun King’ by studying how Emma Carroll has developed characters.

This is Week 3 in a 12 week English scheme of work for UKS2 based around ‘Secrets of a Sun King’ by Emma Carroll; this is a fantastic book which follows the adventure of three children as they explore the history and mystery around King Tutankhamen and Ancient Egypt. During Week 3, the children will be checking the book makes sense to them by creating a glossary of words specific to 1920 and Ancient Egypt (the two time periods in Secrets of a Sun King). Children will develop their inference skills as they meet two new characters in the book. The children will also be learning about modal verbs and adverbs to indicate degrees of possibility. They will be using the grammar techniques to write an explanation paragraph detailing whether they think artifacts should have been removed from King Tutankhamen’s tomb or not.

As the week progresses, the children summarize information about the mummification process and have the option to mummify an orange! The week ends with the children planning the next stage of the story.
