German Directions Starter Activity Keywords KS3 GCSE Wordsearch Anagrams Crossword Cover

German Directions Starter Activity Keywords KS3 GCSE Wordsearch Anagrams Crossword Cover

German Directions Keyword vocabulary activities. There are at least: 1 x Wordsearch 1 x Anagram sheet 1 x Crossword Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

When you click on the red line underneath a letter (if it’s correctly guessed), it will reveal the letter. In this presentation, the German direction phrases are pre-populated, which you will see when you open the presentation. To reveal the whole answer, click on “Reveal”. If the letter is wrong, click on one of the sections of the ‘hangman’ to the left. It will then turn red.

Google Street View treasure hunt to practise directions!

Google Street View treasure hunt to practise directions!

This is a fantastic way to get kids to practise directions and places in town in a foreign language. Find a town where Google street is operational and make a list of instructions for kids to navigate, as if they were actually navigating in that town. It's a little time consuming to make, but kids really enjoy it and it's the next best thing to actually visiting the place in person! The follow-up activity is to get kids to plan one of their own in a town of their choice, to get them to practise places in town, using directions, and using the imperative. I have used it with my Year 8 group, as well as my Year 12 ab initio group, but it can be adapted to any year group by changing the level of difficulty of the questions.

Treasure Hunt - Places in Town and Directions

Treasure Hunt - Places in Town and Directions

A fun game that can be used to practise speaking about places in town and giving directions. Works best if there are prizes for finding the treasures! There are 5 maps with streets and town buildings (church, hospital ect) and three hidden treasure per slide. Students have to guess where the treasure is by naming the place of giving directions there, when you click on the place it reveals either an empty space or a treasure. The third slide turns the whole game into a race between different teams. In stronger classes they could practise prepositions and cases/genders (in der Kirche/ au stade ect) The last two slides are more detailed to practise more complex directions like ‘over the bridge’, ‘at the traffic light’ ect.

Community map - for practicing directions, mapping skills and foreign languages

Community map - for practicing directions, mapping skills and foreign languages

This map is great for students to practice directions. I suggest laminating a bunch and having your students use them to practice directions and prepositions. Mini dinky cars bought at Dollarama or Walmart will fit on the roads. Students love driving around on the streets. Use as a listening mark. - Can students arrive at your location? Use it as a speaking mark. - Can students explain directions from one place to another? Great for à + le/la/l'/les or prepositions and de + le/la/l'/les ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Some or all of the graphics in this resource came from Poppydreamz Digital Art.
