A lesson to encourage pupils to have a positive body image and to celebrate who they are. This is part of a PSHE unit which promotes healthy living and mental well-being.

This is a lesson to help elect school councillors and explain Democracy in the UK. The pupils then ‘campaign’ to be a school councillor before the class votes to elect them. This has been used across KS1 and KS2 to teach pupils about one of the ‘British Values’ and to elect responsible school councillors. All classes in my school really enjoyed the lesson, especially totting up the votes!

This full resourced lesson describes to younger pupils what the 2017 general election is they can understand. It introduces them to key vocabulary such as ‘voting’, ‘Member of Parliament’, ‘House of Commons’ and ‘ballot box’. All you need to do is slice up 30 pieces of paper and a cardboard box for your class to use to vote! During this interactive lesson, pupils will learn how people vote, who they vote for and what MPs do. They then vote for a class MP / student councillor to give voting a try themselves!

These sheets (which are differentiated three ways) give children the opportunity to use expanded noun phrases in a scaffolded way. These sheets would be great for helping pupils describe animals/characters using expanded noun phrases as part of a wider English topic or as a stand-alone SPaG lesson on expanded noun phrases! Every lesson links to the 2014 NC and is fully resourced with slides and worksheets. Below is a description of each Literacy lesson. Lesson 1: reading and answering differentiated reading comprehension questions about The Adventure of the Speckled Band from the book 'Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes' (a child friendly stepping stone book) which is available to purchase on Amazon in both Kindle form and paperback. Lesson 2: using direct and reported speech in newspaper reports - this is personally one of the most enjoyable lessons I have taught lessons as they really enjoyed converting text messages between Holmes and Watson into direct and reported speech! Lesson 3: how to write a newspaper introduction with examples and activities planned around Sherlock Holmes stories. Lesson 4: learning about unbiased newspaper reports and writing without giving personal opinions. Lesson 5: planning a newspaper report using a planning template. Lesson 6: writing a newspaper report about the story they read in lesson 1. Example newspaper report and detailed success criteria provided.

This week of Literacy lessons focuses on skills needed to write a high-quality diary entry. The skills covered in this week are past tense, past progressive tense and using a range of conjunctions. The lessons are resourced, all for under £1 per lesson! The writing outcome of the week is a diary entry as the old man from The Tin Forest and the final lesson gives pupils an opportunity to edit and redraft their work. This chain of lessons was highly successful and led to brilliant diary entries at the end of the week. The lessons can be used in isolation or after the other Literacy planning related to The Tin Forest found in my shop.

This week of Literacy focuses on writing persuasive letters. It includes an opportunity to read good examples, look at the skills involved in writing persuasive letters, planning the letter and an opportunity to write one. Five, fully resourced lessons all for under £1 a lesson! Day 1: Reading good examples of persuasive letters and looking at the features of persuasive writing. Day 2: Skills lesson focusing on using strong sentence openers. Day 3: Lesson about Fair Trade to generate an argument for buying Fair Trade produce. This lesson includes information about Fair Trade for pupils to record and discuss - all the research has been done for you! Day 4: Planning their persuasive letter on differentiated planning grids. Day 5: An opportunity to go through a good example of a persuasive letter on the board to remind children of the success criteria and a chance for the class to write their own persuasive letters to the headteacher.

Week 2 of a Literacy unit focusing on writing Matilda themed stories. This week focuses on planning a short story, drafting the first two paragraphs with a partner (paired write) and writing their own short story. The class really enjoyed learning about the celebrities in this week's Literacy lessons, especially Taylor Swift and Christiano Ronaldo! Five, fully resourced lessons all for under £1 each! Day 1: Reading comprehension focus - children read biographies of a celebrity and answer differentiated (retrieval and inference) questions about the text. This gives them an opportunity to experience high quality, short biographies. Day 2: Children practise using adverbial phrases ready to use them in their own writing. Differentiated worksheets (as for all lessons) are included for their activities. Day 3: Children practise organising information into paragraphs by sorting information from biographies into subheadings. Day 4&5: Children write their own biography about either Christiano Ronaldo or Taylor Swift after going through a good example on the IWB. Differentiated success criteria is included.
