I like to share essential beginner German vocabulary that I can use in everyday talk with my young learners from the beginning of their German learning programme. The key focus is on the definite article, both masculine and feminine, singular and plural, though I do use the set to start to compare these with the indefinite article, which I’ve found to be a really successful way of helping students embed grammatical concepts such as gender, implicitly, without the need for repeated explicit instruction. The 5 fruits in this free sampler are: lemon : oranges : pumpkin : raspberry : star fruit The flashcards / posters are 8.5 x 11 (A4) portrait size. There are two design formats to choose from - German flag or plain without frame, to keep prep costs to a minimum, so 10 flashcards / posters in total. I always print on card stock and / or laminate my flashcards / posters, as they display much more effectively, and remain in excellent condition for years. GERMAN VOCABULARY FOR CHILDREN PRIMARY GERMAN VOCABULARY CARDS KS2 GERMAN VOCABULARY KS3 GERMAN VOCABULARY CARDS AND WORKBOOKS 5 SETS OF 198 VOCABULARY CARDS WITH WORKBOOK @ £2.50 EACH IN THE BUNDLE Files are non-editable in a zipped format. The resource is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, amended, shared or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. There are five sets of 99 beginner German words and phrases, with matching English cards, 198 cards in each set, 495 words and phrases, 990 cards in total. Each set has an accompanying 18-page Reference, Recall & Write workbook. The vocabulary groups across the five sets are as follows: Begrüßungen : Zahlen 0-100 : Tage der Woche : Monate des Jahres : Jahreszeiten : Uhrzeit (o’clock & half past) : Adjektive : deutsche Verben : in der Stadt : Schulfächer : Tiere : Verbindungswörter : Fragewörter : Obst und Gemüse : Wetter : Körper : Farben : meine Familie : Alltagswörter : Deutsch im Klassenzimmer : Fragen und Antworten The card templates allow students to apply their German knowledge practically and creatively, as they put together mini-quiz cards for each other, preferably from memory. Creating new language is an essential element of successful language learning, so this is a key part of the overall activity, and it’s really popular with my students. The Reference, Recall & Write workbook has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical German-English reference list of all 99 words & phrases. Students find this really useful as a learning support resource, and it comes in very handy for quick vocabulary quizzes too. The Recall and Write challenges help students familiarise themselves with, and really embed, the range of vocabulary in the set, and also get used to reading, writing and spelling in German. There are three written recall challenges in the workbook: = Written Recall Challenge One students write the English word or phrase from a German prompt, with all the words and phrases grouped together in the same category = Written Recall Challenge Two with this challenge, students write the words or phrases in German from an English prompt, and again, they’re all group together in the same category = Written Recall Challenge Three the final challenge ‘switches’ at each question from German to English, and lists words and phrases randomly from each category. This challenges the memory more than when the vocabulary is in the order learners first learn it in, with the additional challenge of moving between the two languages = Ideas, Notes and Next Steps encourages students to reflect on their learning = Card template for creative & practical application of language Laminate the game cards if you can - they are far more learner-friendly, and the additional prep and expense is definitely worth it, as the cards will last in excellent conditional for years. It may not be copied, rewritten, shared or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. This European Day of Languages quiz focuses on a range of topics and themes about Europe. Students can broaden and develop their knowledge of Europe in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The quizzes work well as a whole-group team quiz, and are also perfect for pair or small-group activities. The quizzes are for older students, who have a more developed understanding, knowledge and awareness of the world. Some responses will be generally well-known to students, others less so, as the questions range from basic general knowledge to more specialized factual knowledge. This ensures that the activity is equally about reflecting on what students know, as it is about what they can learn. In this way, the quizzes aim not only to consolidate existing knowledge, but also to enable students to learn more about Europe. The questions and answers also provide a comprehensive framework for further exploration of Europe, which both broadens and enriches the learning experience. I generally give students multiple opportunities over the school year to play the quizzes, not just on or around the European Day of Languages. Before we play, I always screen a clear map of Europe, to ensure that students can visualize it in its entirety, the location of individual countries within it, and in relation to each other. This provides an important learning context for students. The quiz opens with general questions about Europe, and then moves on to questions about a range of individual European countries. There are 80 questions across two challenges: Challenge 1: 56 multiple-choice questions, with four response options to choose from. The correct response is in capital letters. Challenge 2: 24 questions in TRUE / FALSE format. Where the answer is false, students should additionally give the correct response. The questions address and topics such as: music and the Arts; daily life; famous figures; geography; history; landmarks; language and linguistics; literature; politics; science; social history; society This is the General Knowledge Europe Quiz edition of the European Day of Languages Europe Quiz #2 - please ensure you haven’t already purchased that edition. Laminate the cards if you can - they are easier to manipulate, and remain in excellent condition for years. Have a browse in my store for more European Day of Languages activities and resources! French Europe 2 multiple-choice quizzes Ideal for cross-curricular learning in French class: students can develop their knowledge of the geography of Europe in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. At the same time, students are developing their French language skills: speaking, listening and reading in particular, as well as broadening their French vocabulary. We play both as a whole-group team quiz, and in pairs or small groups on a regular basis - students are particularly keen to see if they can beat their own points record, and are really motivated by their developing knowledge. The set contains all European countries and capital cities, including some island communities such as the Faroe Islands and Guernsey. Each question has 4 answers to choose from. The correct answer is given in capital letters. The quiz cards are numbered, but questions can be asked in random order too: simply place all the cards in a bowl, box or tin, and work your way through. There are two quiz challenges: Challenge 1 gives the country as a prompt, with four possible capital cities to choose from. Challenge 2 gives the capital city as a prompt, with four possible countries to choose from. This challenge uses the definite article in the responses to help consolidate students’ knowledge of the gender of individual countries. The card numbers for Challenge 1 are in the top right-hand corner; Challenge 2 in the top left-hand corner so that the cards can be organised and sorted easily. Laminate the cards if possible: they’re more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. French Europe Posters These French Europe flashcards / posters are always really popular with my students and great for the beginning of a new school year to decorate your learning environment with specific learning goals. They’re really useful for creating and instant and comprehensive introduction to Europe in French. There are 144 portrait posters (A4, 8.5 x 11) in French showing European countries, capital cities and flags. They give your classroom a great multicultural look and feel, at the same time promoting French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of your - and your students’ - classroom. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the posters can help students develop their general knowledge and understanding of European geography. It’s definitely extra prep and expense, but I do always laminate my classroom display posters / flashcards - they hang on the walls more easily, and I recycle them to display at different times of the school year. There are two backgrounds to choose from - Europe Map or plain. Have a browse in my store for more French resources, including French cross-curricular activities, special offer bundles, and freebies. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. Ideal for cross-curricular learning in Spanish class: students can develop their knowledge of the geography of Europe through classroom decor, really making the most of learning display. There are 134 portrait posters (A4, 8.5 x 11) in Spanish showing European countries, capital cities and flags, including some island communities such as the Faroe Islands and Guernsey. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the posters can help students develop their general knowledge and understanding of European geography. At the same time, they are developing their Spanish language skills: speaking, listening and reading in particular, as well as broadening their Spanish vocabulary. We regularly ask questions during Talk Time, such as ***¿Cuál es la capital de…?***, or ¿Sí o no? Barcelona es la capital de España? - I’ve found this to be a really effective way of promoting speaking in Spanish class, as students tend to find this a really challenging skill, particularly at the beginning of their Spanish learning program. There are several countries, for example Armenia, that are often classed as belonging either to Europe or to Asia. There are also two posters for some countries, such as France, officially known as República Francesa - you can choose either that, or the more frequently-used Francia to display. Laminate the posters if you can - they display more effectively, and will remain in excellent condition for years, especially if you use them as flashcards to introduce Europe in Spanish class. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use. Lively whole-group multi-skill language learning games, ideal for Primary German / KS2 German and KS3 KS4 German students. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompt of the clock faces, makes it perfect for practising, reinforcing & refreshing how to tell the time in German, and for pronunciation practice too. Students often find half past in German quite challenging, similarly fünf vor halb… and fünf nach halb… to denote***25 minutes past and 25 minutes to***, and they definitely benefit from frequent and regular targeted practice. = Set 1: focus on o’clock, half past, quarter to & quarter past the hour = Set 2: focus on 5 & 10 past and 5 & 10 to the hour = Set 3: focus on 20 & 25 past and 20 & 25 to the hour There are 8 clock faces per page, and I cut the cards in sets of 2, so four larger cards per page. This means that students can see two clock faces and times per game card, which really helps to consolidate learning. It’s also a lot less prep than cutting out eight individual cards, though I do actually have a set like this, which we use as a larger-size dominoes game. I always laminate my language learning cards - it’s definitely worth the extra prep time and expense, as they’re more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. The aim of the game is to arrange the clocks in the relevant order. Students will generally have several cards each, depending on the size of your class. We usually set the cards on a table, so that students can see the timeline clearly. I frequently use a timer when we play. Playing in teams, using either a single challenge, or with both challenges together, is really popular - students find the competitive element really motivating and are genuinely keen to see which team can finish first, and whether they can beat their own time record. The games also work well as pair or small-group games. Each set has two games, each with a different challenge: = Challenge 1: with all the the clock times in numerical order, Ich habe… Wer hat…? = Challenge 2: with the all the clock times in random order, which really helps recall and embedding new language, as students often learn time phrases in numerical order, Hast du…? There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the posters help students develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Europe. It’s useful to show students a clear map of Europe, so that they can visualise the location of each country and capital city, not only as an individual location with ***Europ***e, but also as a location in relation to other European countries and capital cities. There is a range of islands, such as the Faroe Islands, and also some countries, for example Armenia, that are often classed as belonging either to Europe or to Asia. Some countries have two posters, such as Greece, officially known as the Hellenic Republic - you can choose either the more frequently-used Greece or the Hellenic Republic to display. This is the European Day of Languages edition of ny Geography Europe posters: please ensure you have not already purchased that set. There are two formats to choose from - Europe map background or plain without frame, which keeps prep costs at a minimum. Laminate if you can, even though it’s extra prep time and expense. The posters display better, as flashcards they’re a lot easier to manipulate, and they do remain in excellent condition for years, so you’ll be able to recycle them many times.
