Engineering: Properties of Materials

This is a two-lesson activity that I designed to cover all of the Engineering Materials that students are required to know about for Unit 2: Product Investigation and the Unit 1: Exam. The presentation gives all of the answers to the worksheet, which has a number of gaps ready for the students to fill in. This can be delivered in a number of ways but I have found it best to deliver in a number of short bursts rather than a full lesson as it contains a lot of information. The worksheets can then be kept for revision purposes.

Graphics: Design Movement Project

I run this task as a short 3-4 week mini project in the summer term. I get the students to think about the 6 different design movements and then either let them pick or I may allocate one to each of them. - Arts & Crafts - Art Nouveau - Streamlining - Modernism - Art Deco - Post Modernism Each year I will change the theme of the project and this year I chose lighting. The end result will be a 'critique' that takes place in the school hall and all staff are invited to take part and ask questions. This prepares students for similar scenarios if they are choosing to study design-based courses at university.

Graphics: A2 Subject Knowledge Content [COMPLETE]

(0)
This is a bundle of 14 presentations that cover the majority of the core subject content for A2 Level Edexcel Graphics. Some of these are as short as 1 lesson and some will last a few weeks. Built into most lessons is a task that will either form a homework or a piece of lesson work for the following lesson. These can easily be changed, removed or increased into a larger-scale mini project. This content only covers the theory side of the course in order to prepare students for the summer exam. I will take breaks at various points throughout the year in order to give students more time to focus on their coursework and practical project(s).

BTEC Level 2 Engineering: How to Evidence Unit 7 Machining Techniques

(0)
I run this lesson prior to starting the evidence-building for Unit 7 (Machining Techniques). This gives the students a good idea of the amount of evidence they will need to build as well as a physical 'tick list' that they can use to help guide them. Students can find it very difficult to build the necessary amount of evidence and this format allows them to become much more aware of the task at hand. This covers the BTEC Firsts in Engineering qualification for Level 1/2 learners in Key Stage 4. The criteria have been taken directly from the BTEC Specification and are directly related to the Unit 7 brief.

This is a quick presentation I give to my Engineering students to inform them about the processes of boring and knurling. The video links give them a good understanding of each process and there is a website link they can access for revision.

Engineering: Lathe Introduction & Risk Assessment

I run this lesson before letting any student work on the lathe. This teaches them about the different parts to the machine as well as what they do. Typically I run a demonstration whilst they complete the worksheet. The Risk Assessment task is important as they will have to complete a full Assessment for their Unit 7 paperwork (please see my other resources). This gives them the practice in order to complete this to a good standard but also serves to teach them about the important safety features of the machine.

This covers the BTEC Firsts in Engineering qualification for Level 1/2 learners in Key Stage 4. This PowerPoint covers information required for Task C (Processes) of Unit 2 (Product Investigation). There are example diagrams to cover the brief, including; Injection Moulding CNC Turning Drop Forging There is also a step-by-step grid at the end which is a requirement of the brief for Level 2 learners and you can use this on the whiteboard to draw examples in.

Graphics: Fourdrinier Process & Papers and Boards

This is a 3-lesson bundle that covers the basics of the Fourdrinier process as well as the different paper and board types available. I teach this to my AS level Graphics students but this could be used for KS4 also. There are a few 'lesson tasks' to choose from which revolve around students creating their own revision resource, either on the process itself of on the products that result from the process. I have also added my step-by-step process on how we make our own paper in school. This teaches students about the process and gives them a practical task to do. I ask them to bring in some old paper which could be newspaper, tissue paper or even small flowers and leaves. We then follow the process listed on the sheet and then leave the wet pulp sitting in the frames. I made these very quickly by making an A5 frame and stretching some netting over and attaching with a staple gun. If you would like more information about how I run the paper-making process please contact me and I will be happy to help.I find that this is a fun introductory task to AS level and helps students remember the process much better.

BTEC Level 2 Engineering: Unit 2 Tracking Spreadsheet

(0)
This is the tracking sheet that accompanies the Unit 2 Booklet that I have for sale. This spreadsheet is something that I display each lesson to the group to inform both them and me where each student is in the unit. Each column references a specific page in the booklet and each column is conditionally formatted to change depending on the data you enter; Entering 'y' = box turns green meaning work is completed Entering 'r' = box turns orange meaning work needs to be resubmitted Entering 'n' = box turns red meaning work was not completed Entering 'a' = box turns blue meaning student was absent when work was collected I have found this to be an invaluable resource during my lessons and the students are able to self-track and manage their work. I am uploading this without any password protection so that the entire workbook is editable if you wish to modify this as you wish. Feedback appreciated!

Engineering: Workshop Safety Contract

This is the contract that I hand out to my Year 10 Engineers on the first lesson of the course. This informs them of the types of behaviour required to be successful in the course. I ask for both a student and parent signature. This has the added bonus of being able to be included in their Unit 7 Paperwork (please see my other resources) as part of the evidence for Task B4: Working Safely.

BTEC Engineering Bundle

8 Resources
This includes all resources required to teach and complete Unit 2 (Product Investigation) and Unit 7 (Machining Techniques). The two main resources in this are the BTEC booklets. These are booklets which contain everything required for the unit; assignment briefs. student worksheets, observation records, assessment records and student signature pages.

BTEC Level 2 Engineering: Unit 7 Machining Techniques [Full Booklet]

(1)
This covers the BTEC Firsts in Engineering qualification for Level 1/2 learners in Key Stage 4. This booklet utilises the Authorised Assignment Briefs for Task A and Task B of Unit 7, including all assessment and learner declaration pages. There is dedicated space for all required evidence needed to pass the unit and the Marking Criteria has been taken from the BTEC Specification to help the students understand this. Typically, I set specific pages as homework, which can be printed and written by hand or word-processed. This has greatly improved the organisation of this paperwork heavy unit and helped to keep the students on task.

Engineering: How to Read a Vernier Calliper

(0)
This is one of the very first lesson I teach to my Year 10 Engineers when they first start the course. It typically takes 2 lessons and I give them randomly sized stock pieces, each with a random sized hole drilled in a different location. Their task is to take accurate measurements using the callipers. I usually run this as a group task and it is a good starting point as most of them have never had to read accurate measurements before.
