Analysis of article by Matthew Abbott entitled Dad and the Burma Railway: It changed his life and mine. The article examines the experiences of the writers father, Bruce Abbott as a Prisoner of War constructing the Thailand-Burma Railway and the lasting physical and mental impact these experiences had on him and his son. Great lead-in to a discussion of intergenerational trauma and ways in which society finds to recognise and express feelings relating to this trauma (e.g. Anzac Day, memorials, museums, inclusion in school syllabuses, etc.). Personal account of Kristallnacht and its aftermath by a witness to the event and an examination of political developments today that are similar to those in Nazi Germany in 1938.

Analysis of the article, Scars of the Burma railway trauma that never healed from the Telegraph (UK) and written by Tom Rowley. The article reports on the experiences of Fred Seiker, a Dutch POW who worked on the construction of the Thailand-Burma Railway. It is a good narrative of Fred Seiker’s deprivations and his mixed feelings and beliefs about his experiences during and after the war. This resource is part of a unit of work on Richard Flanagan’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North.

Analysis of the article written by Trent Dalton entitled My debt to those glorious Rats. The article examines the writer’s search for why his grandfather’s leg was amputated in Operation Bulimba, during the 1942 North African Campaign. The article is descriptive and evocative. It details how ordinary people become extraordinary people. It demonstrates why personal values and beliefs really do make a difference now and in the future.
