It is done in a Mastery style focusing on class discussion and AfL in order to enable students to make their own discoveries.

Making predictions for picture sequences - mastery style lesson

I use this lesson after the continuing picture sequences lessons. It builds on the ability to draw the next picture in the sequence by going on to predict what will happen next. How many squares will be in the 10th picture or the 100th picture? How do you know this from the information that you are given? It is starting to build up the idea of a position to term rule and thinking about how that would work and the links between where our picture is in the sequence and the number of shapes it is made up from. To carry out this lesson you will need mini whiteboards and pens as well as some form of counters or cubes. Personally I have both available in my lesson.

Describing picture sequences - Mastery lesson.

Describing picture sequences lesson based on a Mastery style of teaching. The starter is based on the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I would go though these on the board highlighting the methods used. There is a think, pair, share activity, some group tasks and some use of manipulatives. This is followed by an independent task complete with answers and an exam style question. I use some multiple choice cards for my first set of AFL questions which you can download from my shop or you could just do those using a mini whiteboard

I created this to use with my low ability Year 7 class. They were struggling in counting back in 10's, 100's and 1000's when we were generating sequences. This worksheet gives them the starting number and they have to find the first 5 terms. It is differentiated with some of the harder questions going past zero
