Year 2 Maths Number This game is suitable for children working at expected and greater depth in numeracy. It supports adding multiples of ten to any given number. Children can work independently in a group during mental oral starter. The game is engaging and allows children to demonstrate their mental maths skills application. Teachers can assess using AFL how children reason their answers whilst playing this game. The game is suitable for year 2 children and it supports mastery maths.

Adding and subtracting on a number line including finding the difference. An excellent array of worksheets differentiated according to structured numberline in 5’s 10’s or in 1’s. Can be easily edited to move on to different scales for year 2 e.g. jumping in steps of 3s , 4s or 10s. Children can start from practical resources using bead strings and number lines and then move on to pictorial and abstract form when ready. Very good for EAL learners and SEN learners.

This is fun and engaging way to work with money for young children. They can show reasoning with number and application of skills. In this problem solving task children are using money and showing a system. How many different ways can you make the amount using 2 coins. Differentiated for low ability with scaffolding provided and less amount of coins to use. Higher ability to use bigger amount and three coins. Additional money work consolidates number e.g. giving change from an amount using a number line to find the difference (and counting forward from the smallest number). Children working at the expected standard in the new maths curriculum can use a ruler as a substitute for a number line. Suitable for ks1.

Year 1 and 2 Maths Investigation with shape and number This is a fun, engaging and creative lesson with shape. The lesson has been successfully used to apply knowledge of shapes in a year 2 setting. Children can begin to think of problems systematically. They think of the best way to start, that there is more than one answer, that they can use number doubles and counting on to support them. Children are encouraged to find different ways to make a 9 sided shape family. They need to be secure with properties of simple 2d shapes previously such as sides of regular shapes. Work can be differentiated by giving children regular or irregular shapes. Very stimulating activity for all learners. The activity can be easily adapted for both year groups.

Year 2 Maths Number -Shapes and Fractions Finding different fractions including 1/2, 1/4, and 2/5, 2/3 within a shaped pattern. Children working at greater depth can answer questions like which one is more 2/4 or 2/8 of this chocolate bar. They can also solve problems in a fun and engaging way to find equivalent fractions. This work is suitable for Mastery level in year 2 and is adapted for the new maths curriculum. Children can be challenged to write the number sentences for working out different fractions they need to shade e.g 2/4 of 8 is … 8 divided 4 x 2 (so they need to shade 4 out of 8 boxes). Differentiated activities also included for children working at and below Band 2.

Maths in KS1 This is an excellent resource to secure to addition to 20. The task is designed to encourage speaking in full sentences using sentence stems e.g. There are 2 red cars and 3 blues cars. There are 5 cars altogether. The children can be challenged to show understanding of addition as being commutative - (can be done in any order) - this can also be done by using visuals to represent number sentences where the equals sign is at the front e.g. 5= 3+ 2. Teachers can develop vocabulary by encouraging the use of star words in a full sentence. This is a good resources to use when moving from practical resources to pictorial representations. Excellent and most suitable for EAL and SEN learners. Suitable for Reception EYFS and year 1 working towards.

Year 2 Maths - Symmetry This is a fabulous bundle of resources to teach symmetry in Year 2, using 2d regular and irregular shapes. Children first investigate how many lines of symmetry each shape has. They sort them in order one line of symmetry, 2 lines of symmetry or 3 or more lines of symmetry etc. They then move onto reasoning with symmetry in 2d shapes and prove true or false statements such as - do all 4 sided shapes have four lines of symmetry. They show their understanding using APE it- Answer it, prove it and explain it. Following that, children sort shapes into a carrol diagram with given criteria to show a secure understanding of symmetry. The powerpoint have several examples to embed learning with shapes and how to find line of symmetry. Children working below the expected level can find and sort into symmetrical and asymmetrical objects. 3 days of detailed planning and visual materials- support EAL and SEn learners. Knowing your times tables is essential for securing maths at the expected standard, in the new maths curriculum. This resources will help you to rote learn the 2,3,4,5,6 and 10 times tables with your class. There are differentiated resources to print so that children can practise every day or weekly. The times tables are visually displayed in columns, grid method and for children to fill in empty boxes. This resource is practical and visual for EAL learners to establish good basics maths to lay the foundation of mental maths in year 2 and 3. Most children will be familiar with the 2, 5, 10 times tables, so they can be challenged to use the grids to find the answers to missing numbers e.g 5 x … = 35. They can also move on to the 3, 4, 6, times tables. Daily practice, chanting and oral rehearsing is advocated for all children to be able to count forwards, backwards, in and out of order. Using inverse is also recommended to find the missing blanks on the grid. Suitable for the new maths curriculum.

Year 2 Maths Number Estimating calculations by rounding to the nearest multiple of 10 first. This resource has differentiated activities for children to solve an equation by rounding. They then write a reasoned answer about which answer is the closest. e.g is 12 + 9 closer to 20 or 30? children select 30 and write a sentence e.g 12 rounds down to 10 and 9 rounds up to 10 so 20 is the closest answers. children working at greater depth have further opportunities to round, reason and also use the > and < sign to select the appropriate answer. This is a challenging activity for all levels. Children will be able to develop fluency with estimating and rounding. They will need a pre-teach lesson about rules of rounding prior to this. This is a good resources to assess children's ability to reason with number. They have several statements that they have to prove such as if you multiply odd with odd the answer is always odd. Or if you start on the number 14 and count in multiples of 2 you will land on 35. The children write examples of their working out and prove if the statement is true or false - or sometimes, never, always. This is a good activity for children to show independent working out and demonstrate prior knowledge of odds, evens, counting in steps of 2, 5, 10, 3,4s, etc. Suitable for greater depth children and differentiation is available for those working at or below.

Key Stage Art and Design Tessellation 2 Lesson Design your own tessellation tile lesson and powerpoint. Pupils are inspired by the work of artist Escher. Pupils will understand how a tessellation tile is created using a geometric shape like a square. Pupils will cut into the shapes and then reassemble them on opposing sides. Pupils can make varying tessellating tiles that may look like different animals like dogs, fox, fish, or bird in the style of Escher. Or they may choose to keep their design abstract form. Year 2 Maths Measures - Reading scales in kg and grams. First, the children have the opportunity to think about the different measures of unit required for different purposes, e.g. measuring height of door, amount of liquid in bath, the length of playground, weight of book etc. They then focus on reading scales for mass and find out how to read scales accurately. Some children confuse the dial reading for mass with a clock and these misconceptions must be addressed. There are opportunities for mastery and greater depth problems in these bundle of resources. Year 2 Telling the time to the hour, half past, quarter past and quarter to. Children are encouraged to understand what each hand on the clock represents. They move onto telling the time an hour later, hour before, half an later and half an hour before. They look at word problems related to time and work out for example which clock is showing the time one hour after 10.30. They tick the clock that is showing a time in between 3 o’clock and 4 o’clock (e.g a clock face showing 3:15). The work on here is suitable for children working at the expected standard in Maths for year 2. The word problems have challenges for all ability groups including questions to challenge children working at greater depth.

Year 2 tell the time by showing where the hour hand and the minutes hands. Children need to be confident in telling the time before they use this activity. They must understand that the hour hand is the small hand and the long hand is the minutes hand. Greater Depth Maths - Year 2 TAF objective- Determine remainders using known facts. This is a greater depth standard, however, the objective has been differentiated so that all the class can access it at their level using visual and scaffolds. HA use known facts to solve remainders MA use multiplication facts of 2x table and division facts LA and SEN use numicon to solve how many 2 numicon can fit into a shape. The children master the objective by demonstrating reasoning and using known facts. 2x 7 = 14 and 2 x 8 = 16 (this is too high because I don’t have 16 socks). So the closest number of pairs is 7. 15 divided by 2 = 7 remainder 1 Suitable for the new maths curriculum. A necessary objective to meet the standards for greater depth and useful to consolidate multiplication and division for working at children. I hope you find it useful.
