What is Assessment Only?

Assessment Only is an alternative route to QTS that will allow your staff to be independently assessed against the English Teachers’ Standards and if successful, be recommended for the award of QTS.

Retain and develop talented staff

  • Increase the number of staff with QTS at your school.

  • Qualify staff while they continue to work at your school.

  • Develop your own qualified teacher workforce.

Qualify your staff whatever your setting

  • Our Assessment Only route can be undertaken in any school setting – state funded, MAT, independent and SEND (including PRU, alternative provision, residential and specialist units).

  • The assessment period will take no longer than 12 weeks and can be started at almost any point in the year – so staff can train at a time that’s right for them and your school.

  • Your school will need to verify compliance documentation for the member of staff and provide a testimony for their employment at the school.

  • Our Assessment Only route costs £3,600 (incl. VAT).

Suitable candidates

  • This route is aimed at school staff with a degree and significant teaching experience who can demonstrate that they already meet the English Teachers’ Standards without additional preparation or training.

  • If your staff aren't ready for QTS assessment, our Straight to Teaching programme can help them improve their teaching and gain enough experience for our Assessment Only route – all while they continue to work at your school.

Approved provider

Tes Institute is an approved Assessment Only provider and will be able to assess your staff member in your school and provide them with the opportunity to demonstrate that they meet the Teachers' Standards.

A Tes Institute pathway tutor will visit them in school, observing lessons and reviewing their evidence in order to verify that they meet the criteria before recommending them for QTS assessment. For the assessment, an independent assessor will observe lessons and inspect their evidence and, if they are successful, recommend them for QTS.

The Department for Education (DfE) will award QTS based on our assessor’s recommendation.

Thoughts from our schools

  • The different routes into teaching give individuals the flexibility to find a route which suits our school and their needs. I would highly recommend Tes as they guided us through the whole process, taking the stress out of the situation.
