What is the Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship?

Our Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship is a nationally recognised, online and in-school programme that will provide your TAs with the pedagogy and expertise to best support the class teacher and raise pupil achievement – for little or no extra cost to your school.*

Develop highly skilled teaching assistants

Our Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship will help your staff to:

  • Better support pupils to access the curriculum and make good progress.

  • Gain confidence in supporting pupils with SEN, EAL or SEMH.

  • Understand how to actively support the class teacher.

  • Contribute to planning, class activities and team meetings.

  • Safeguard pupils in a positive and nurturing environment.

  • Gain a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification.

  • Develop in their role at no cost to them and little or no extra cost to your school.*

Train staff online and in-school

  • Apprentices will receive an 18-month blended programme of online and in-school training.

  • This will be followed by a 3-month End Point Assessment (EPA) period where an external assessment will be carried out and on successful completion their Level 6 apprenticeship can be awarded.

  • They’ll be assigned a personal pathway tutor who will provide face-to-face support, coaching and encouragement throughout their programme.

  • Apprentices will study theory and carry out practical tasks via our virtual learning environment and will dedicate 20% of their working week to off-the-job training.

Pay little or no programme fees

  • Our Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship programme costs £7,000, but during the academic year 2023/24, apprenticeship levy paying schools won’t have to pay any course fees for apprentices*.

  • If your school doesn't pay the apprenticeship levy, you’ll need to contribute just 5% of the fees, which is £350 per apprentice.

To join our programme your staff must:

  • Be employed as a teaching assistant, learning support assistant or specialist support assistant in your school.

  • Be assigned an in-school mentor who will support them throughout their apprenticeship.

  • Have a minimum of functional skills level 2 in maths and English before starting their EPA. We offer training and additional tutor support for these tests to apprentices who do not have GCSE English and maths at grade C/4, at no extra cost.

  • The Level 3 Apprenticeship with Tes has given me the chance to learn more skills and become much more confident as a TA. I’m now taking the lead in my year group for children with healthcare plans – this qualification is really helping my career. The school is showing that they believe in me by supporting me through the apprenticeship programme.
