Each set has 40 facts cards focusing on world languages, and offers a great whole-group learning activity at any time of the school year. The cards are really useful as entrance / exit tickets, starters, bell ringers and ice-breakers in the back-to-school phase. Sharing, learning and discussing the information together is a very social activity, and really gets students up from behind their desks, walking around talking to each other. This kind of languages-related activity is really popular with students, providing them with a meaningful enrichment learning opportunity alongside the prescribed curriculum.

The information addresses a broad range of topics such as linguistics, history of languages, world history, shifting geographical and political borders and migrating populations, and the impact these have had - and continue to have - on language. The sets are designed for older students, as the information itself requires a certain level of general knowledge, language awareness, and understanding of world geography.

There are 35 written questions in each set, providing students with an opportunity to consolidate what they have learnt, and to express their knowledge in writing. Students generally use class workbooks to write their responses, and there is a recording sheet in the set for more formal writing activities.

For ESL / EFL English class, the sets are an effective cross-curricular learning activity, with a multi-skill focus: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Crafting responses orally and in writing requires different language skills, enabling students to develop their English holistically. The CEFR level is roughly B1-B2, with some elements of C1, ideal for advanced intermediate to advanced English class.

Laminate the cards if you can, as they are easier to manipulate and will remain in excellent condition for years. To save prep time, simply print and laminate individual question pages to distribute, rather than cutting out individual cards.
