This skills lesson is aimed to encouraged independent extended writing - pupils examine the causes of the armada before reading and annotating a WAGOLL that demonstrates how to reach level 7 at KS3. They then create their own piece analysing the reasons Philip launched the Armada. WALT: Explain why Phillip launched the Armada Level 3: identify more than one cause of the Spanish Armada. Level 4: describe each cause in detail. Level 5: Explain why each cause upset Phillip enough for him to launch his Armada. Level 6-7: Evaluate the importance of causes to reach a judgement.

Paired Texts - Australasia - Literal, Inference, Meaning and Summary questions

This guided reading resource includes a pair of texts about Australasia with four comprehension skills sheets to complete, providing reading passages and questions that are challenging and engaging. Using the ‘LIMS’ approach, students work through Literal, Inference, Meaning and Summary questions to ensure that in the course of a week, they have practised skills in reading right across the Common Core. Text is differentiated and an answer scheme is provided. Suggested itinerary: Day 1 (30 mins) – Read both texts as a class. Highlight key parts. Discuss together. What have we learned? What do we want know more about? It is worth asking the students to write down any questions they have about the texts and putting them on display. Day 2 (30 mins) – Literal sheet Day 3 (30 mins) – Inference sheet (or meaning sheet if you prefer) Day 4 (30 mins) – Meaning sheet (or inference sheet if you prefer) Day 5 (45 mins) – Summary sheet and looking back at questions from the start of the week. This is the second in a series of Paired text resources looking at the seven continents of the world. Keep an eye on my store. Differentiation: All questions are the same, which should make marking easier! However, the texts differ, with asterisks in the bottom right corner indicating the reading level.

The British Empire: Goods and Trade.

**The purpose of this lesson is for students to develop their understanding regarding the importance of trade for the growth of the Empire. ** **Lesson Plan: ** Hook / starter - Embedded video of all the countries which have been part of the British Empire - students to enter and remember as many as they can. Lesson introduction (optional) goods of the Empire such as bananas, spices, tea, coffee, sugar etc. are placed into bags / big bags - students circulate the room and feel feel / smell the bags content to guess what the good may be. This leads into the watching of a BBC video where students are challenged to remember more goods that the Empire traded in. Students complete the ‘Empire Map Worksheet’ with the locations of goods and trade routes. Students are then issued with an advertisement of one of the goods sold back in Britain. students engage in a MIX-PAIR-SHARE activity to discuss key questions linked to the advertisements Students then return to write up their work in the books linked to a GCSE style question (Exam skill advice and structure included for differentiation). **Plenary: **Blockbusters linked to empire good! **Lots of of interactive activities to engage students with songs included and moving gifs! **

TELL ME ABOUT - Elizabethan England

Please use this mat as a revision game to play in groups in the classroom. This should be printed on A3 paper and laminated so that it can be re-used. This means that students can write their initials on their square instead of using counters. The way the game is played can be manipulated. However, the main instructions are as follows (also included on sheet): This is to be played in groups. Each student has a counter. They roll a dice and move that number of places. They then have to tell or explain to the others in their group about that topic. If they manage 15 seconds, they get 1 points. If they manage 25 seconds, they get 2 points. If they get 35 or more seconds, they get 3 points. Please use a great revision resource for group work. Please also leave any feedback for future revision resources and how to improve them.

9-1 Edexcel History Learning/Topic Placemats for Early Elizabethan England: 1558 - 88 Topic 3 – Elizabethan Society in the age of exploration, 1558 - 88 Written in PowerPoint (The reverse side of the placemat remains the same throughout this study unit). These interactive learning placemats were designed to meet the challenges of the new 9-1 GCSE. They build upon the successful Medicine Through Time Placemats that I previously designed (and which received 5* reviews by all who have purchased them up to the time of launching these new materials – see: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/9-1-edexcel-gcse-history-of-medicine-place-mat-question-structure-11627611 ). The new placemats have been identified as best practice during a ‘Challenge Partners’ review as well as being identified as best practice by other History teachers on the Olevi ‘Outstanding Teacher Programme’. The new design learning placemats support both teachers and students in addressing the: a) dramatic increase in the curriculum content needed for the different units b) support the need for increased literacy demands c) help students become familiar and more confident in recognising the correct response needed for the unprecedented number of different question styles The placemats are designed to be double sided. One side focuses on the CONTENT: providing an overview of key knowledge and understanding needed (this will change for each topic area within this GCSE unit). Every placemat across the GCSE range is designed to encourage greater understanding of: Historical Context - through timelines, picture prompts and key words Awareness of the ‘big picture’ so students can see how individual lessons fit into the unit and make clearer links between prior and future learning – through ‘Big Picture’ questions. They begin by looking at the problems that he faced during his reign and the impact of the break with Rome and include his relations with Parliament, The Divine Rights of Kings, Money, taxation and religious problems. The issue of the religious problems facing James I is explored via both the Gunpowder Plot and The Pilgrim Fathers. Whilst interconnected with both these problems is popular beliefs and superstitions which is explored through my resources on Witchcraft. The overarching theme to all these resources is their link to not just the consequences of the break with Rome but ultimately the causes of the English Civil War. Wordsearch Puzzle sheet of keywords on the theme of ‘The Aztec Empire’. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!
