World Book Day in German for Years 9 - 11

I designed this resource for an able Year 9 group, but you could use it for GCSE groups too. You could start by reading out the book descriptions on page 3, and pupils guess the book you are describing. Then pupils have to match up the images of the book covers, authors and main characters. Then they use the sheet to compose their own book review. It’s differentiated, so all can manage phrases from the yellow box, and some will also manage ones from the green. You might want to give out the text of the book descriptions you started with, you may prefer not to. A nice plenary with an able group is to get them reading out their book reviews, and pupils guess which book they are describing. Hope it’s useful!

I’ve used Wie spät ist es? as well as Wie viel Uhr ist es? so that students can see that both are used. The accompanying Reference, Recall & Write workbook includes a GERMAN to English time phrase and clock face reference workbook, which students find useful as a learning support resource. Ideally, students will keep the workbooks in their learning files/folders to use and refer to over a longer period of time, particularly as a revision resource. The workbook works best when photocopied double-sided, and double-stapled on the left-hand side, rather than a single staple in the top left-hand corner for example. This format is far more reader, writer and learner-friendly, and can be used more effectively as a learning and reference resource. GAMES WITH GOALS! GERMAN TELLING TIME BINGO GAMES are an ideal activity for practising how to tell the time, O'CLOCK AND HALF PAST THE HOUR - students do tend to need lots of practice with those pesky half pasts! They’re also really useful for developing listening, speaking, reading and writing/spelling skills. The pack includes 21 non-editable files: ONE & TWO: 40 clock-face bingo 12-square grids, 4 per page (10 pages). You can give students a random selection of pages, with students selecting the order of grids they play from. You can also cut out the grids, and place them in a small bowl or similar object on tables. Students select grids randomly from the bowl. Depending on the size of your class, you should have several winners per game! You might prefer to laminate the grids - students can use wipe-clean pens, and you can recycle the grids many times. THREE: 40 GERMAN time phrase bingo 12-square grids, 4 per page (10 pages). FOUR: 40 English time phrase bingo 12-square grids, 4 per page (10 pages). FIVE: 4 12-square word grid and blank clock face template for students to create their own grids for each other. SIX: 1 GERMAN and 1 English calling card, with all the time phrases written in full. SEVEN TO TWENTY-ONE: 15 SILENT BINGO games PLAY SILENT BINGO! Select a grid type for students - clock face, GERMAN or English time phrase. Using the SILENT BINGO files, show each slide at varying speeds. Students cross off the corresponding phrase or clock. These are really versatile, with a range of challenges, and depending on which skills you want to focus on - for example, show the pictures only using GERMAN words grids for vocab recall & reading practice; show the English phrases using GERMAN phrase grids for mini-translation practice as well as vocab recall/reading; show the GERMAN phrases using English phrase grids for reading & vocab recall - students have to be completely silent - it’s a really popular way of playing bingo! There are 5 different games of each type: clock face, GERMAN phrases, English phrases. These games are designed for players to cross off all the words or pictures on their grids in order to win the game. GET THE MOST FROM YOUR BINGO GAMES! Before playing, read all the time phrases out loud in GERMAN several times, at varying speeds, with students repeating carefully - this not only helps students develop their GERMAN pronunciation, but also maximizes opportunity to learn and revise clock times. Students can also have their own calling card to read out loud from, one for a small group of students is sufficient - this will help them to link sound and spelling in GERMAN. The questions range in complexity and challenge, and are great for honing numeracy skills too - especially if calculators are not allowed! The resource comprises the following 3 files: Set of 36 cards, 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Print, laminate and cut out. Depending on how long you want the activity to last for, choose a particular number of cards per small group of students, and place them in a tin, bowl or small box so that students can easily select a card, and then replace at the end of the activity. You can simply place all the cards in the bowl/box and let students work their way through, either in a single lesson, or across a series of lessons - I’ve found 15-20 minutes across several lessons can work really well. Students do need to remember to file their recording sheets carefully! 2-page answer recording sheet. Best printed double-sided. 2-page answer key, again best printed double-sided, and laminated for longevity. One answer key for each small group is sufficient.
