Movie Guide: 13th (Netflix documentary)

This 90 minute documentary produced by Netflix chronicles the trend in mass incarcerations, with emphasis on its impact on African American males. It follows trends in legislation through the Nixon, Reagan, Bush and Clinton presidencies and how policy decisions have negatively impacted minorities disproportionally. It also examines the role of ALEC in crafting legislative policy and how member corporations directly benefit from increased mass incarcerations. This documentary would be excellent for any Ethnic Studies or Social Studies class where you are discussing civil rights, racial disparities, and how current legislative policies affect populations differently in the US. Download contains 30 questions that accompany the documentary chronologically and a list of suggested follow up activities for students to take their learning to the next level around the issue.

A level politics taster session

A taster session for students considering taking up A level politics. It is designed for those centres taking the USA option of Edexcel, but could be adapted e.g. for AQA or other boards. It involves a discussion, a card sort, a look at a short video and the use of predictions and data. I’ve used it for a 30 minute session and for a longer 50 minute session, but drew out the discussions more in the latter.

End of Term Tutor Time / PSHCE

A fun and creative Citizenship / Tutor Time project lesson for students in the last week of term. Could be used for activities week in Humanities or just as a reward lesson the last time you see your class for the summer. Very easy to set up - you will just need a few balloons, string, sellotape, old clothes, felt tips and a any other boxes/construction materials you can find (just things that would usually be thrown in the recycling). The students work in small groups to research and recreate a famous political icon (info sheets and clip tasks included - all instructions on Powerpoint). The lesson can last as long as you want it to, and I gave prizes of sweets at the end for the best one - but that’s optional! My students really enjoyed it and we took pictures at the end for the school website. Hopefully yours will love it too. I’m going to be adding lots more free PSHCE lessons over the coming months. This unit was originally used as the first unit the Year 7s would take in Citizenship, but has since been added to and improved. The original written unit plan is included and everything is entirely editable too. Gettysburg Address Escape Room Activity: The Gettysburg Address Escape Room will take students on a secret mission around the classroom! This escape room has students decode interesting facts about the Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. This is the perfect resource to introduce a famous historical speech in a fun way! The activity includes modern, easy to understand translations of Lincoln’s speech. The Gettysburg Address Escape Room has students walking around the classroom breaking codes. Students will complete a short formative that corresponds to the readings. This will ensure they are reading the content, not just solving the puzzles. The codes include ciphers, Morse code, cryptograms and a final 4 digit code based on the decoders/clues. Each clue and code is different. The codes require students to think differently to decipher or decode them. Some codes are easier than others. Some codes require critical thinking to determine what a letter/symbol stands for. Each code will reveal interesting facts or an analysis about the Gettysburg Address. The use of secret code will keep your students engaged while competing to find the final code. Students can report the final code to you. If you wanted to, you could purchase a 4 digit lock that you program, but it is not necessary at all! No props needed!! This is a NO PREP, PRINT & GO Activity! The best age range for this resource is 8+. Please look at the preview to determine if this resource works for your age group. Younger students may need some help with some of the more difficult codes. You can use the pre-labeled clues or you can challenge older kids to choose/find the decoder that works for each of the clues. A set of labeled and non-labeled decoders are included for differentiation. A “How to Decode” puzzles is also included. Once your students try one of my escape rooms, they will beg for more! In addition to learning or reinforcing the subject matter, my escape rooms encourage teamwork and critical thinking. As a “timed” challenge, students will be engaged from beginning to end.
