Religious Education Belief in Action KS2 What does Religion mean to me? Scheme Unit of work

This unit includes all you need to teach for around a term to KS2. There are lesson power points with back up activities, sheets, discussion points, resources, assessments etc. There is an assessment and a scheme of work to go with the powerpoint too. Covers rules, who is my neighbour/Good Samaritan, Sermon on the Mount, Mother Teresa. Jewish Shema, Sikh 5 Ks, Buddhist 5 precepts, 5 Pillars of Islam and life of St Paul in the New Testament (these are only story references with pages linked to books we have in school so you would need to develop this slide further if you do not have children’s Bibles to read from). I will build on this next year but we had a long term so I added them in to keep me going… The PPT has 10 lessons and 63 slides with activities. You can pretty much walk into the room and teach from it, without further resources. Ideal if RS cover teacher or non-specialist too. I have developed a whole unit work from Year 5 up to Year 8 which I am now uploading. These have taken me hundreds of hours so I hope this saves you lots of time. Happy Sunday!

The differences between Sunni and Shia Muslims

The differences between Sunni and Shia Muslims

This lesson requires students to create mindmaps on the differences between Sunni and Shi’a Muslim’s using Victor Watton’s Islam textbook. The textbook is old but it is in simple language that enables students to understand the basics and build on that knowledge later on in year 13.

Sunni Islam and the Four Caliphs

Sunni Islam and the Four Caliphs

For the unit on Traditions of Islam, this presentation covers an introduction to Sunni Islam and the history of the’Four Caliphs’. These lessons (about 2-3) provide a good background for my students before I teach the key differences between Sunni and Shi’a Muslims. You will need Robert Frager’s book and if you hover over the blue box on slide 14, it will take you to a 20 minute documentary by Al Jazeera about the four caliphs.

How to answer an exam question - The Prophet Muhammad

How to answer an exam question - The Prophet Muhammad

I use this lesson to consolidate all the learning of the prophecy and revelation unit. In this lesson I use the ‘treesoning’ activity which I picked up on at a P4C conference. It is a great way to get the year 12 students thinking about the question and encourage them to develop a deeper understanding. If you do not know what treesoning involves, look it up. The last few slides can be used to check their planning and provide them with additional ideas to discuss in their essay.

Hijrah and Migration to Medina

Hijrah and Migration to Medina

My lesson on the Hijrah and significance of the migration to Medina. Requires good subject knowledge to be able to explain this through. This topic took me two lessons to get through the slides but a small section of the PBS documentary (which I have noted on the slide) does a good job of providing a clear explanation.

The life of the Prophet Muhammad

The life of the Prophet Muhammad

My fourth lesson for AS Islam. This lesson will take more than one lesson. It includes a timeline and tasks that I set using the WJEC year 1 textbook on the early life of the Prophet Muhammad. As part of another lesson and for homework, my classes watch Rageh Omar’s BBC documentary on the life of Muhammad. The other excellent documentary to accompany this lesson or for homework would be to use PBS A Legacy of a Prophet.

Prophets of Islam - Jesus, Moses and Abraham

Prophets of Islam - Jesus, Moses and Abraham

This is my third lesson for AS Islam which takes two lessons to deliver. You will also need copies of the appropriate chapters from B.Wheelers book on the prophets of Islam. I simply divide the class in 4 groups, they research each prophet and provide feedback in the following lesson. Notes on each prophet are also included at the end of the presentation, which have all been taken from Wheeler’s book.

Explain the Importance of the Eid Festival

Explain the Importance of the Eid Festival

This is a short (30-45mins) R.E lesson to teach lower KS2 children about the importance of the Eid (Eid Al Addah) festival: why the concept of sacrifice is important in Islam and what happened in the original sacrifice story that is remembered at Eid (Ibrahim and Ismael). The presentation begins with a discussion-based starter with examples of sacrifices children will be familiar with from general life. The video (linked from YouTube) explains the story of the original story of Ibrahim and Ismael). The activity that follows is differentiated three ways: ‘1 chilli’: order the storyboard pictures and match with them the text, 2 chillies: pupils create their own pictures to accompany the story text, 3 chillies: pupils create their own text and images to narrate the story. Please note: It is an important belief in Islam that characters of religious significance should not be explicitly depicted in images - therefore the faces of the characters on the 1 chilli activity are hidden - the powerpoint reminds pupils completing the two more challenging activities to do the same with their drawings. It is worth reiterating this orally to your class. For those who complete quickly, an extra challenge is described on the powerpoint.
