Video Rose by Jacqueline Wilson - Unit of Work

You will get files in a Word document as well as PDF format so it is easily editable. This will save you hours of work! This resource contains a range of vocabulary and quality discussion questions for each section of the novel. It also includes a choice of follow-up tasks children could complete as they read the book. It is designed to last 7 weeks, however it can be adapted to suit your learners. I have used it in my classroom following the Highland Literacy Project’s way of organising reading in the upper primary classroom. Children engage in reading 3 times per week: Session 1 - Pupils discuss the text, read the set pages independently and look up new vocabulary from the pages they have read. Session 2 - Pupils discuss the pages read with their group and the teacher. Session 3 - Pupils complete a follow-up task based on their book to demonstrate further understanding. When I have used this, I have printed a few pages of the document to share between pupils in the reading group. For Week 1, Session 1 - pupils use page 1 of the document. For Week 1, Session 2 - pupils use page 2 of the document. For Week 1, Session 3 - pupils have completed follow-up tasks in their jotters. I hope you find this resource useful, however you choose to use it!

Primary Writing Curriculum Coverage Checklists! (Year 1-6)

Primary Writing Curriculum Coverage Checklists! (Year 1-6)

These checklists provides an academic overview of the writing curriculum content to be covered year-by-year from Year 1-6. I provided these to teachers in my own school, who marked the individual elements of the curriculum as they were covered (their aim was to ‘tick’ each element twice over an academic year). They have found it extremely useful, as it offers a useful breakdown of the curriculum statements into the individual components to be taught, which is not always as self-explanatory as one would assume! It is broken down into Composition, Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation, Spelling, and Handwriting sections. Please note that the spellings listed are indicative of the patterns to be learnt - it is not the exhaustive list. Furthermore, the composition section details our interpretation of what needs to be covered over a year, some schools vary from this. For this reason, the document is provided in Word, for easy editing. It is also provided as a PDF, to prevent formatting issues between computers. Hope that this proves helpful to you too!

The Hunger Games - Race to the Cornucopia! (Descriptive Writing Lesson)

The Hunger Games - Race to the Cornucopia! (Descriptive Writing Lesson)

This engaging and informative lesson enables students to compose sophisticated, imaginative creative writing, through producing a first person account about competing in the opening stages of The Hunger Games. In order to do so, students first analyse the descriptive writing devices and sentence structures used by Suzanne Collins in Chapter 11 of The Hunger Games - the section in which the Hunger Games commence – before applying what they have learnt to their own compositions. The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: Defining each of the different types of descriptive devices, through playing a fun, interactive bingo game; Reading an extract from Chapter 11 of the text (provided) which describes the moments immediately before and after the Hunger Games commence; Identifying the language techniques used in the extract to paint an image of place in the minds of the readers, and to create the desired atmosphere; Analysing the effectiveness of each of Collins’ descriptive devices; Analysing the sentence structures and lengths employed by Collins in the extract; Creating their own first-person description of the horrific moments at the Cornucopia, before and after the Hunger Games begin; Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts. Included is: Whole lesson PowerPoint - colourful and comprehensive; Bingo Cards for the starter activity (and host instructions/ questions);’ Extract from Chapter 11 of The Hunger Games; Structure strips to support the descriptive writing; Writing to Describe Helpsheet to support the descriptive writing; Comprehensive Lesson Plan. All resources are provided in Word (for easy editing) and PDF (to ensure formatting remains fixed between different computers). There are also opportunities for group learning, speaking and listening, peer assessment, and whole class discussion. I originally used these resources with year 8 classes, however colleagues have used them for between years 5 and 10 with some adaptations. Writing Goals Poster and Stickers to Raise Standards in Writing

Writing Goals Poster and Stickers to Raise Standards in Writing

This poster has been used from EYFS to Year 4 as a way to raise attainment and encourage self-assessment and it has proven to be very effective. It has been particularly effective in EYFS. The poster is printed and displayed in the classroom and used each time children participate in writing activities to help them understand the features of their writing. When completing independent writing, these images are stuck into children’s books to remind them of their aims and also to self-assess their work at the end. We use Tickled Pink and Green for Growth but any system will work. Children then get a stick to match each target they have achieved. This pack includes A complete writing poster A simplified writing poster for younger children/less able. Ready to print stickers for each target Editable WALT and WILF with images to stick in children’s books If you would like the editable version of the poster, let me know once purchased and I can send it to you.

Year 2 information text, 3 week non-fiction unit, planned and fully resourced, tourist attraction

Year 2 information text, 3 week non-fiction unit, planned and fully resourced, tourist attraction

Talk! Drama! Reading skills! Grammar skills! Games! Writing an information text! In this three week non-fiction writing unit, children look at an information text (a poster about the now destroyed Brighton Chain Pier). Then they play with the text and create new sentences of their own, developing key Year 2 grammar skills. Finally they create an information text of their own (Brighton Palace Pier), applying the skills taught in the previous two weeks. Every resource is included and most are resources are differentiated 3 ways - there’s a lot of work here! You could easily swap the model for an attraction local to you. You could also swap the outcome to an attraction near you - the skills in this unit are all transferable. Here are the objectives covered thoroughly across the three weeks: This unit revisits Y1 grammar: I can make up sentences. I can join my ideas using ‘and’. This unit introduces new Y2 grammar concepts: I can use commas for lists. I can use questions, statements, exclamation and commands. I can use expanded noun phrases to describe and specify [for example, ‘the polished stones’]. I can add a chunk (clause) using ‘and’ (coordination) This unit introduces the following Y2 terminology: noun, noun phrase, statement, exclamation, command, adjective, verb, comma This unit introduces these Y2 composition objectives: I can write an information poster. I can plan or say out loud what I am going to write about. I can use new words (vocabulary). I can write my ideas in sentences (continued from Y1). I can make improvements and changes with the teacher or with my friends. I can re-read to check that my writing makes sense. I can proof-read to check my spelling and punctuation [Are the ends of my sentences punctuated correctly?] I can read aloud what I have written clearly and with expression. Reading skills : I can spot meaning breakdown. I can repair a meaning breakdown. Enjoy!
