Design your own Purim Megillah

Design your own Purim Megillah

Megillah is the Hebrew word for the scroll on which the biblical Book of Esther is traditionally written. The Book of Esther tells the story of the festival of Purim. The story of Purim took place 2,400 years ago. It tells the story of how Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai saved the Jewish people from persecution by Haman. Purim is celebrated on the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar, which occurs in the early spring. Jewish people celebrate the joyful story of Purim with elements similar to carnival. It is traditional for Jews to dress up in costume, perform plays, listen to music, and dance. Reflection on Sukkot

The festival of Sukkot occurs from the 15th-22nd of Tishrei, which is falls usually around September or October. It is the Jewish harvest festival and reminds Jewish people of the Israelites’ wandering in the desert for 40 years after receiving the Ten Commandments. During this time the Jewish people lived in temporary shelters or booths made from branches. Sukkot is the Hebrew word for ‘booths.’ Today Jewish people all over the world build sukkahs outside their homes to remember how God protected them and cared for them both in the wilderness and today. The shofar is a musical instrument made from a ram’s horn. The Shofar is used in synagogue to announce the beginning and end of the Jewish festivals of Rosh Hashanah (New Year), and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). The blowing of the shofar symbolises a wake-up call to reflect on the events of the past year, to apologise for any mistakes, and to make changes for the New Year ahead. Bad Business - introduction to Business Ethics

Bad Business - introduction to Business Ethics

A description of a fictitious business called Everlasting Soul - a children’s clothing company. I have used this in Key Stage 3 RE lessons. Throughout the overview of the company are questionable practices that would contradict ethical theories and religious teachings. Students highlight the things that they think present a problem. It can also be used with GCSE Business Studies students as a starter on Business Ethics. Great paired activity. Generates good discussion and debate.
