Develops an understanding of Zonation and Succession through a case study of the Garigue ecosystem in the Corbiere range in South East France as part of the Pyrenees. The Garigue is a typical Mediterranean Type ecosystem but its range has been greatly increase historically through human influence. With rural depopulation secondary succession has developed and biodiversity change is occurring. This resources is designed for Topic 3: Biodiversity and conservation of the IB Diploma Environmental Systems and Societies Course. In particular it is designed to give practical application to 2.5: Investigating ecosystems (measuring biodiversity) and 3.4: Conservation of biodiversity. It cast the student in the role of conservation manager who has to report on the biodiversity of three sites and make a recommendation of which site should be the conservation priority. It includes sample site data for students to manipulate using Simpson’s Index and an opportunity to create Graphs using Standard deviation error bars on mean data. The resource also asks students to: Explain the criteria you used to select which should be protected areas. Evaluate different approaches to protecting biodiversity guides your choice of area. The resource includes a full worked example data sheet for educators as well as notes for educators on how students might respond. There is no marking scheme as this is designed to give students an opportunity to undertake a task which could resemble parts of an Ecological based Survey type IA, very similar to those that Ecologists have to complete in the field every week.

Focusing on Topic 4.4 Water Pollution from the IB Environmental Systems and Societies course, two resources that lead students through an understanding the use of biotic indices, to monitor pollution. The first resource is a case study based on the Red River in Hanoi, Vietnam and the problems associated with aquatic pollution because of rapidly industrialization and population growth. A series of questions that use the IB Command terms guide students to a deeper understanding of both the underlying knowledge and the deeper synthesis. The second resource is a simulation based on a theoretical river in the UK. Students are given a detailed map of the River Beck and tables of macroinvertebrates sampled at 5 different stations. They ae then guided through Calculations of BMWP and ASPT and asked to draw conclusions supported by evidence about biological state of the river. The can then self assess against an adapted IA matrix for data analysis. A teachers excel summary sheet of the calculations is also included. Both resources are available as pdf, word and epub . A link is also included to google drive versions of each resource for schools currently operating online.

Two complete lessons that use Topic 2.1 from the IB ESS (Environmental Systems and Societies) course to introduce students to descriptive statistics, Students t-test and Chi squared. Each lesson is self contained but could be used anywhere in the course to introduce typical statistical methodologies that are applicable to both the Internal Assessment and Extended Essay. Each lesson is available in either pdf or epub formats. Each lesson focuses on theoretical data from about the Forest Elephant populations of the Zakouma National Park in Chad. In the first lesson Students get to use descriptive statistics to calculate mean, standard deviation and standard error of the mean and use these to investigate variation in mass between male and female elephants. In the second lesson students use t-values to investigate the confidence of two population means and chi squared to investigate the presence of tusks in male and females and food choice in the whole population. Each lesson contains step by step walk through methodologies and examples of how to use technology to calculate these values. While designed to accompany the IB ESS course the lessons could be used in any post 16 curriculum that has an ecology or biogeography element.

This resource was originally designed for use with Postgraduates entering the conservation industry, often coming from a general biology background with little practical experience in conducting vegetation surveys. Over the last 20 years it has been updated to suit the needs of educators who themselves may be coming from similar backgrounds, but need to teach post-16 students a range of techniques. This is not an exhaustive recipe for getting sampling “right” but should be of use in a range of situations.
