Venn diagram
To prepare the activity - Print and cut out the images. Place one of each image in a zip lock baggie or envelope. You should have a total of ten images for each team and also two hoops to create a Venn diagram (see your Physical Education department to borrow some hoops).
Teams are to work collaboratively to sort the cards into reversible and irreversible changes and place them on the Venn diagram. Ensure that the students can differentiate between these two changes. When all the teams have completed the task ask a speaker from each team to present their Venn diagram to the class. If they have placed any images in the overlapping circle they are to give an explanation.
To extend and conclude the activity the teams can choose a different way of categorising the images, for example they may choose to sort them into changes that produce a gas or non gas. Once again speakers share their findings with the class. Ask the students to take a photo using the class iPads of their completed Venn diagram. Students can print these out and glue them into their journals or if the students have their own learning blogs they can create a link or upload their diagram onto their blog.
Alternative way to conduct this activity
Give each student one image and the students complete the questions on slide 2.
This could be a review or assessment task.
