Use this literacy mat to support writing about art. Simply ask your students to write a sentence about each of the categories e.g. line, tone/value, texture etc using the adjectives provided. This has been designed to work with any artwork. A good example is also included on the place-mat using a painting by Klimt. This 3-page download includes:

An Art Literacy Mat for the UK
A version for the USA (to account for different spellings)
A lesson plan for how to use the mat.

I always tell students that they don’t need to limit themselves to the words on the list, so this provides support for those who need it but also lets other students fly!
This is also ideal for gallery education.

This has been a great starter for students. They really stepped up to the challenge as this helped foster their ideas and create imagination for writing about artist and their own works.

This gave a good structure to my lesson. Each student wrote a paragraph about a different O'Keeffe artwork.
