This is a fantastic resource I have put together that is fun and educational. I have used this with many year groups and they all enjoy playing it, while at the same time developing their numeracy skills and confidence in Mathematics. Questions range from level 1 to level 3. Students are given a set number of poker chips, or money and have the opportunity to gamble it on a question. If they are successful they win the amount they bet, if they get the question wrong they lose the amount they bet. The person/team with the highest value is the winner. Topic included are Percentages Ratio Fraction arithmetic Substitution Solving Equations Nth Term Indices Rules Area Volume Compound Interest I have used this resource in school and Pupil Referal Units and it has been very successful in getting students to engage and enjoy mathematics. This is a fantastic resource that I have used with Key Stage 3 Students, I have worked for over 20 years in alternative education mainly with students who are at risk of exclusion, who have gaps in their education and find maths difficult. The quiz is a fantasic way of getting students to engage, as they can work independently or in small teams. With more able students it makes a fantastic starter and covers a number of topics and 20 questions that include. I have successfully used this power point to support students in KS3 and KS4. The power point covers Percentage of an Amount. Percentage Increase Percentage Decrease Percentage Increase Compound Interest Compound Depreciation. Each topic is explained in clear detail and I have also included examples of percentage questions that come up in Functional Skills Exams, these can be adapted to include the names of your students so that it is relevent and interesting to them. I have worked in a Pupil Referal Unit and Alternative Education for over 20 years and when I have been observed by the local authority and Ofsted, they have been very impressed with the power point as it represented the interests of each student and they could relate to it. If you teach students who find Mathematics difficult, have Special Educational Needs or learning difficulties, I would highly recommend using these resources. I have put together this Power Point to help motivate students who find Mathematics difficult. I have used this resource successfully for several years in Pupil Referral Units and alternative provisions. The Power Point presentation identifies why maths is important and the personal benefits of having good numeracy skills. The Power Point also explains the ABC of Mathematics which if followed correctly can boost motivation levels and help students secure a GCSE pass. The Power Point also breaks each GCSE Mathematics module down and identifies which topics students need to study for their exam. I have also included exam tips, useful websites and grade boundaries. The Cost of Living Quiz is based on the living expenses for a family of four. The quiz can be played independently or in teams and students have to estimate certain expenses that a family of four have to pay out for each week, month or year… Examples the cost of Monthly Mortgage/Rent Monthly Food Costs Electricity Costs Gas Costs Water Costs Yearly TV License Home Insurance Yearly Car & MOT Costs Clothing Costs Yearly Holiday Costs Yearly Clothing Costs Weekly Take Away Costs Monthly Phone, Sky, Internet Costs Weekly Leisure Activities If they predict the correct amount they score 10 points, if they estimate within the range given they get five points. The player or team wit the most points at the end, is the winner of the quiz. This is an excellent interactive quiz to play in teams, as it gets students working together and listening to each other. The quiz also raises awareness of the cost of living and why parents have to budget. I have used this quiz for many years and the students have always enjoyed it.

This fun and interactive quiz is based on the format of a “Who Wants to be a Millionaire Quiz” I have used this quiz very successfully while I have been working with Keystage 3 and Keystage 4 students. The questions are differenciated so that pupils of all abilities are able to participate and have fun. The quiz is educational and also enables students to identify which topics they are unfamilar with, so they can then revise more on these topics, so that they are fully prepared for their GCSE Mathematics exam.
